Mechanisms of Sperm Chemotaxis
Sperm are attracted by chemical factors that are released by the egg—a process called chemotaxis. Most of our knowledge on sperm chemotaxis originates from the study of marine invertebrates. In recent years, the main features of the chemotactic signaling pathway and the swimming behavior evoked by chemoattractants have been elucidated in sea urchins ...

Chemotaxis is defined as the ability of living cells to determine the direction of their locomotion along a concentration gradient of attractant and repellant substances. A survey is given of the various in vitro techniques for detecting chemotaxis in leukocytes including monocyte macrophages, polymorphonuclear cells, lymphocytes and bacterial cells ...

It is the purpose of this review to provide a survey of some more recent work on chemotaxis of leucocytes. Attention was drawn to the existence of a variety of cytotaxins (chemotactic mediators) and in particular to their cell specificity. The significance of these different cytotaxins for the accumulation of leucocytes in inflammatory sites in vivo is

Abstract The chemotactic response of unicellular microscopic organisms is viewed as analogous to Brownian motion. Local assessments of chemical concentrations made by individual cells give rise to fluctuations in path. When averaged over many cells, or a long time interval, a macroscopic flux is derived which is proportional to the chemical gradient.

Chemotaxis - that is oriented locomotion of single cells - was shown by motion analysis of Tetrahymena thermophila. An electronic registration of swimming tracks was carried out in gradients of chemoattractant established in a modified Zigmond chamber. The attractants used were proteose peptone, platelet extract and fibroblast growth factor.

Bacterial chemotaxis, the movement of motile bacteria toward or away from chemicals, was discovered nearly a century ago by Engelmann (1) and Pfeffer (2,3). The subject was actively studied for about 50 years, but then there were very few reports until quite recently.
