Promiscuous stimulation of HSP70 ATPase activity by parasite‐derived J‐domains

open access: yesFEBS Open Bio, EarlyView.
The malaria parasite Plasmodium falciparum exports three highly homologous yet functionally divergent J‐domain proteins into human erythrocytes. Here, we show that J‐domains isolated from all three proteins effectively stimulate the ATPase activity of both endogenous host and exported parasite HSP70 chaperones.

Economic and Social Potential of Family-supporting Services, Limits and Challenges

open access: yesActa Universitatis Agriculturae et Silviculturae Mendelianae Brunensis, 2014
Due to the increase of the economic pressure on households, it is increasingly more difficult to balance family life and economic activity. Reasons for this evolution can be the increased labour market participation of women, the ageing of the population

Single‐molecule DNA flow‐stretch assays for high‐throughput DNA–protein interaction studies

open access: yesFEBS Open Bio, EarlyView.
We describe an optimised single‐molecule DNA flow‐stretch assay that visualises DNA–protein interactions in real time. Linear DNA fragments are tethered to a surface and stretched by buffer flow for fluorescence imaging. Using λ and φX174 DNA, this protocol enhances reproducibility and accessibility, providing a versatile approach for studying diverse ...

Quantum Cheques

open access: yes
Publicly-verifiable quantum money has been a central and challenging goal in quantum cryptography. To this day, no constructions exist based on standard assumptions. In this study, we propose an alternative notion called quantum cheques (QCs) that is more attainable and technologically feasible.

Chameleon sequences reveal structural effects in proteins representing micelle‐like distribution of hydrophobicity

open access: yesFEBS Open Bio, EarlyView.
Amino acids sequence of two different proteins with the same sequence (chameleon sequence—black boxes) represent in 3D structure of the proteins different secondary structures: HHHH—helical and BBB—Beta‐structural. The chains folded in water environment adopt different III‐order structures in which the chameleon fragments appear to adopt similar status

Iron homeostasis disruption and lipid peroxidation in skeletal muscle during short‐term immobilization

open access: yesFEBS Open Bio, EarlyView.
14‐day casting‐induced immobilization reduced gastrocnemius muscle mass and increased non‐heme iron and ferritin heavy chain levels. Despite iron accumulation, transferrin receptor 1 and iron regulatory protein 2 were paradoxically upregulated. Lipid peroxidation was elevated without compensatory antioxidant responses.
