Variability in sweet chestnut susceptibility to chestnut blight disease

The chestnut blight disease, caused by the fungus Cyryphonectria parasitica, introduced into Europe last century, quickly spread throughout the sweet chestnut range and devastated many deciduous forests of the continent. The presence of an RNA virus can alleviate the symptoms of blight disease – Chryponectria hypovirus 1 (CHV1), in the fungal cytoplasm.
