Abstract The dissolution of chicken feathers was investigated for the purpose of reducing solid waste and obtaining keratin. For the first part, the effects of sodium sulfite (0.05–0.3 M), urea (0–4 M), temperature (50–85 °C), and incubation time (2–4 h) on feather dissolution were investigated via a factorial design.

Abstract CHICKEN feather meal represents a large potential source of protein for feed use. The volume of dry feathers available annually at processing plants has been estimated as in excess of 50,000 tons. Feathers are almost pure protein which, if made available for feed use, could do much to supply amino acids in poultry diets.

Early‐life environment drives long‐term decrease in adult body mass in a wild bird population

Using more than 90,000 body mass measures of adult and nestling great tits Parus major, we show that the 1 SD decline in adult mass between 1978 and 2024 is a consequence of changes in the environment (i.e. increase in population density) experienced at early life.

Paler within the city: Carotenoid‐based colouration covaries negatively with the proportion of impervious surface in great tit (Parus major) territories across Europe

Across six European cities, great tits in more impervious territories had paler carotenoid‐based plumage, but not lower brightness or UV chroma. This suggests that urban habitat imperviousness is associated specifically with lower carotenoid pigment deposition, rather than broad changes in feather reflectance or structural quality.
