Breastfeeding and child development [PDF]

open access: yesAmerican Economic Journal: Applied Economics, 2021
We show that children who are born at or just before the weekend are less likely to be breastfed, owing to poorer breastfeeding support services in hospitals at weekends. We use this variation to estimate the effect of breastfeeding on children's development in the first seven years of life, for a sample of births of low-educated mothers.

Child care subsidies and child development [PDF]

open access: yesEconomics of Education Review, 2008
Abstract Child care subsidies are an important part of federal and state efforts to move welfare recipients into employment. One of the criticisms of the current subsidy system, however, is that it overemphasizes work and does little to encourage parents to purchase high-quality child care.

Lower-income 3-year-old children are more likely than wealthier children to live in homes with inadequate physical environments and to ...

Lung Development in the Child [PDF]

open access: yesAmerican Physical Education Review, 1902
The prominence of affections of the lungs in various diseases, either as complications or primary elements, gives this organ perhaps a higher importance than any other organ in the body. The emphasis given to tuberculosis is not the result of a mere scare, nor is the fear of it to be characterized as a simple "phthisiophobia" without sufficient ...
