Many plants from tropical and subtropical regions show stress symptoms when grown at low, nonfreezing temperatures. These chilling-sensitive species include crop plants such as cassava, cotton, soybean, maize, rice, tomato, sugarcane and pepper. Many of these crops are grown in regions more temperate than their tropical origins.

Water stress-induced chilling tolerance in rice; putative relationship between chilling tolerance and Ca2+ flux

Abstract Chilling-sensitive rice varieties acquire chilling tolerance when their roots are exposed to short term water stress (0.5 M mannitol, 30 min). Pharmacological experiments using various Ca 2+ channel blockers suggested that the water stress signal gives rise to Ca 2+ flux, resulting in induction of chilling tolerance.

Many plants of tropical and subtropical origin are severely damaged when exposed to chilling temperatures between 2 and 15°C. In contrast, the cruciferous plant Arabidopsis thaliana is chilling tolerant and, therefore provides an alternative model plant system for the identification of chilling tolerance traits.
