Systematic Metabolic Engineering and Model‐Guided Optimization for High‐Level Production of L‐Theanine from Xylose in Escherichia coli

open access: yesAdvanced Science, EarlyView.
This study is pioneering in constructing the shortest known synthetic pathway for L‐theanine production from xylose within E coli. Through comprehensive metabolic engineering strategies, our engineered strain achieved the highest reported L‐theanine titer from xylose, with a titer of 95.42 g/L, and a yield of 0.55 g/g.

Famines Past, Famine’s Future [PDF]

open access: yes
Famine, like poverty, has always been with us. No region and no century has been immune. Its scars—economic, psychological, and political—can long outlast its immediate impact on mortality and health.

Engineering Immune Cell to Counteract Aging and Aging‐Associated Diseases

open access: yesAdvanced Science, EarlyView.
This review highlights a paradigm shift in which advanced immune cell therapies, initially developed for cancer, are now being harnessed to combat aging. By engineering immune cells to selectively clear senescent cells and remodel pro‐inflammatory tissue microenvironments, these strategies offer a novel and powerful approach to delay age‐related ...

Famine exposure in early life increases risk of cataracts in elderly stage

open access: yesFrontiers in Nutrition
BackgroundEpidemiological studies have shown that early-life nutritional deficiencies are associated with an increased risk of diseases later in life. This study aimed to explore the correlation between famine exposure during the early stages of life and

Enamel Hypoplasia Related to Historical Famine Stress in the Contemporary Chinese Population

open access: yesDental Anthropology, 1997
Linear enamel hypoplasia (LEH), a defect in enamel formation, has been frequently attributed to malnutrition and other physiological stress during periods of enamel development (Sarnat and Schour, 1941; Kreshover, 1960).

Famine in North Korea Redux? [PDF]

open access: yes
In the 1990s, 600,000 to 1 million North Koreans, or about 3 to 5 percent of the precrisis population, perished in one of the worst famines of the 20th century.North Korea is once again poised on the brink of famine. Although the renewed provision of aid

Systematic Engineering of Proteases in Saccharopolyspora Spinosa Reveals Synergistic Enhancement of Spinosad Biosynthesis via Substrate Flux Optimization

open access: yesAdvanced Science, EarlyView.
ARTP mutagenesis yielded Saccharopolyspora spinosa mutant D184 with improved extracellular nitrogen utilization. An integrated workflow of protease genetic manipulation, multi‐omics, and rational synergy design pinpointed a pepP‐clpP‐htpX synergistic triangular combination.

Ionic Highways under Multivariate‐Coupled Strategies: Ultrahigh Power Generation from Industrial Waste Liquors Using Robust COF Membranes

open access: yesAdvanced Science, EarlyView.
This study presents a multivariate‐coupled strategy to fabricate TB‐COF membranes with tunable charge density via uniformly distributed Bpy groups, enabling efficient ion transport and energy harvesting. The robust β‐ketoenamine‐linked structure ensures stability, achieving power outputs of 53.08 W m−2 (pH 4), 190.52 W m−2 (low‐grade heat), and 258.81 ...
