Modeling chip formation with grooved tools
International Journal of Mechanical Sciences, 1993Abstract A slip-line field model for orthogonal cutting with a tool containing a groove-like feature on its rake face is proposed. Primary contact at the tool-chip interface is taken to be plastic. Based on experimental observations, it is assumed that the chip flows into the groove, and is forced to curl by Coulomb friction contact with the groove ...

Chip Formation When Hard Turning Steel
Manufacturing Science and Engineering: Volume 2, 1997Abstract Hard turning of machine parts is a production process that holds considerable promise for the future since it is an effective means of increasing productivity. Instead of machining a product in the soft state, hardening the part by heat treatment, and then providing the required finish and dimensional accuracy by grinding the ...

Investigation of chip formation during milling
International Journal of Production Economics, 1997Abstract Metal cutting process is actually a process of chip formation. Most of the information, for evaluation of the cutting process, such as surface finish, cutting temperature, tool life and cutting forces are closely related to the chip geometry.

Mechanism of chip formation in ultrasonic vibration drilling and experimental research
Proceedings of the Institution of Mechanical Engineers, Part C: Journal of Mechanical Engineering Science, 2019When difficult-to-machine materials are drilled, chips are produced, and these chips are difficult to control during the drilling process. Due to the limitations of conventional drilling, materials are drilled by ultrasonic-vibration-assisted technology.

Catastrophe Theory Models of Chip Formation
Journal of Engineering for Industry, 1982The problem of describing variations in the deformation process in chip formation is considered by constructing two catastrophe theory models of the process. Shear plane chip formation models are studied, in which the shear energy as a function of shear plane orientation and work-piece deformation along a fixed shear angle is minimized.
