Study of Chip Morphology and Chip Formation Mechanism During Machining of Magnesium-Based Metal Matrix Composites

Volume 2: Additive Manufacturing; Materials, 2017
Magnesium (Mg) and its alloys are among the lightest metallic structural materials, making them very attractive for use in the aerospace and automotive industries. Recently, Mg has been used in metal matrix composites (MMCs), demonstrating significant improvements in mechanical performance.

Autogenous bone chips: influence of a new piezoelectric device (Piezosurgery®) on chip morphology, cell viability and differentiation

Journal of Clinical Periodontology, 2005
AbstractAim: The aim of the present study was to investigate the influence of a new piezoelectric device, designed for harvesting autogenous bone chips from intra‐oral sites, on chip morphology, cell viability and differentiation. Methods: A total of 69 samples of cortical bone chips were randomly gained by either (1) a piezoelectric device (PS), or ...

Automated Quality Inspection of Microfluidic Chips Using Morphologic Techniques

2013
We apply morphological image processing for quality inspection of microfluidic chips. Based on a comparison of measured topographies with design data, we provide a coherent solution to four central tasks in the quality assessment of injection moulded polymer devices: determination of channel depth, identification of burrs, calculation of transcription ...

On predicting chip morphology and phase transformation in hard machining

The International Journal of Advanced Manufacturing Technology, 2005
A finite element model is developed to predict the chip formation and phase transformation in orthogonal machining of hardened AISI 52100 steel (62HRC) using Polycristalline Cubic Boron Nitride (PCBN) tools. The model mainly includes a chip separation criterion based on critical equivalent plastic strain; a Coulomb’s law for the friction at the tool ...

Morphological stability of solder reaction products in flip chip technology

Journal of Electronic Materials, 2001
We have studied two kinds of solder reactions between eutectic SnPb and Cu. The first is wetting reaction above the melting point of the solder, and the second is solid state aging below the melting point of the solder. In wetting reaction, the intermetallic compound (IMC) formation has a scallop-type morphology. There are channels between the scallops.

Interfacial Morphology and Shear Deformation of Flip Chip Solder Joints

Journal of Materials Research, 2000
We examined the interfacial morphology and shear deformation of flip chip solder joints on an organic substrate (chip-on-board). The large differences in the coefficients of thermal expansion between the board and the chip resulted in bending of the 1-cm2 chip with a curvature of 57 ± 12 cm.

Correlation Between Machinability and Chip Morphology of Austempered Ductile Iron

Journal of Testing and Evaluation, 2017
Abstract In this work, macrostructure, microstructure, and work hardening of as-cast and austempered ductile iron chips produced by different cutting speeds were investigated. Cutting forces, surface roughness, and tool wear were also studied.
