Invitation to chiral physics

Ferroelectrics, 1997
Abstract Although measurement of the optical activity of solids had been impossible for 170 years since its discovery by Arago (1811), we have developed a method called HAUP (high accuracy universal polarimeter), which enables one to measure simultaneously optical activity, birefringence, and rotation of the indicatrix of any crystals, even those ...

Chirality as a problem of biochemical physics

Russian Journal of General Chemistry, 2007
Molecular chiral asymmetry, created in the biosphere during biological evolution, is unambiguously realized in today’s world at the genetic level and in biosynthesis. According to our hypothesis, origination of molecular chiral asymmetry is associated with fractionation of enantiomers of chiral compounds that abiogenously evolved at the ocean ...

Chirality: A Relational Geometric‐Physical Property

Chirality, 2013
ABSTRACTThe definition of the term chirality by Lord Kelvin in 1893 and 1904 is analyzed by taking crystallography at that time into account. This shows clearly that chirality is a relational geometric‐physical property, i.e., two relations between isometric objects are possible: homochiral or heterochiral.

Chiral physics, quarks, and NN forces

Nuclear Physics A, 2001
The problem of the derivation of effective quark kernels in the QCD non-perturbative regime is discussed. We argue that the physics of spontaneous breakdown of chiral symmetry acts like a filter for the details of such kernels, allowing for a quantitative discussion of low-energy hadronic phenomena despite the lack of knowledge of their precise form ...

Physical properties of wave scattering by a chiral grating

Journal of the Optical Society of America A, 2004
Wave scattering by a chiral grating is studied in this paper. Numerical results are given, and physical properties are discussed, including the influence of frequency, angle of incidence, and aspect ratio. At high frequencies we find anomalous coupling regions known as Wood's anomalies, which are explained by the excitation and reradiation of leaky ...

9  Physical studies of chiral surfaces

Annu. Rep. Prog. Chem., Sect. C: Phys. Chem., 2004
Driven by the demand for heterogeneous asymmetry catalysis, studies of chiral surfaces have become important aspects of modern surface science. With the maturity of surface science techniques, this has enriched the success in the study of low-symmetry chiral surfaces at the molecular level.

Physical Model of a Chiral Flexural Waveguide

2018 12th International Congress on Artificial Materials for Novel Wave Phenomena (Metamaterials), 2018
We present a novel physical model of a gyrobeam, an active chiral structural element where flexural and rotational motions are coupled. In the literature, the gyrobeam is described as a mathematical object possessing a continuous distribution of stored angular momentum.

Physics of chiral symmetry breaking

Nuclear Physics A, 1991
Abstract This subsection of the “Modeling QCD” Workshop has included five talks. E. Shuryak spoke on “Recent Progress in Understanding Chiral Symmetry Breaking”; below it is split into two parts: (i) a mini-review of the field and (ii) a brief presentation of the status of the theory of interacting instantons.

Physics and Biology: Helping hand for chirality

Physics World, 2000
In the 1960s the drug thalidomide led to enormous tragedy in the UK. The reason was that the drug was a "chiral" molecule – a molecule that is present in left-and right-handed mirror image forms. One form acted as a safe painkiller; while the other caused severe abnormalities in foetuses.
