Studies on chitin [PDF]

open access: possiblePolymer Bulletin, 1989
SUMMARY Chitin was aminoalkylated with N,N-diethylaminoethyl chloride in organic solvents or aqueous solutions in the presence of sodium hydroxide. The substitution reactions in organic solvents occurred under heterogeneous conditions on dispersions of powdery chitin while those using alkali chitin solutions proceeded in solution.

The structure of chitin

Biochimica et Biophysica Acta, 1960
Abstract A new structure is proposed for the polysaccharide chitin, [C8H13O5N]n. X-ray diffraction fibre photographs of lobster tendon reveal a well-defined orthorhombic lattice with the space group P212121 and cell dimensions of a = 4.69 A , b = 19.13 A , and c = 10.43 A (fibre repeat).

Chitin gels

International Journal of Biological Macromolecules, 1989
Chitin dissolved in N,N-dimethylacetamide, N-methyl-2-pyrrolidone and their mixed solvents in the presence of 5% LiCl was treated with acetic anhydride-pyridine, and the mixture solution was heated at 100 degrees C for 6 h to give a partially O-acetylated chitin gel. Chitin dissolved in these solvents in the presence of 5% LiCl was mixed with pyridine,

Green Fabrication of Amphiphilic Quaternized β‐Chitin Derivatives with Excellent Biocompatibility and Antibacterial Activities for Wound Healing

Advances in Materials, 2018
Bacterial infection has always been a great threat to public health, and new antimicrobials to combat it are urgently needed. Here, a series of quaternized β‐chitin derivatives is prepared simply and homogeneously in an aqueous KOH/urea solution, which ...

Peptide synthesis on chitin

International Journal of Peptide and Protein Research, 1996
The use of chitin as a support for solid‐phase peptide synthesis is described and illustrated by synthesis of four peptides, varying in length from 10 to 29 residues. Syntheses were performed in a continuous‐flow peptide synthesizer, using Fmoc chemistry.

Advances in Functional Chitin Materials: A Review

ACS Sustainable Chemistry and Engineering, 2019
Chitin is a promising natural polymer to produce functional materials due to the attractive combination of abundance, price, favorable biological properties, and biodegradability. However, multiple literature examples often confuse processing of chitosan,

Chitin solutions and purification of chitin

1988
Publisher Summary This chapter describes the dissolution and purification of chitin isolates via the newer anhydrous media. There is no clear line of demarcation between chitin isolation and its purification, but the isolation method affects chitin quality and in part determines any additional dissolution and other purification steps required.

The presence of α-chitin in Tardigrada with comments on chitin in the Ecdysozoa

Zoologischer Anzeiger - A Journal of Comparative Zoology, 2016
Abstract We used Fourier Transform Infrared Spectroscopy (FT-IR) to characterize for the first time chitin in the cuticle of a eutardigrade ( Macrobiotus cf. hufelandi ). Analysis of the isolated cuticles of single individuals and comparison with commercial α-chitin isolated from shrimp shell and β-chitin from squid pen revealed that the amide I ...

CHITIN

1973
Publisher Summary The chapter focuses on Chitin, which is N-acetyl-2-aminocellulose or more specifically, 2-acetamido-2-deoxycellulose. It is composed of N-acetyl-D-glucosaminyl units linked β-D-(1 → 4). In the same way, D-glucopyranosyl units are linked in the cellulose molecule as a linear array and with a molecular weight of 2–3 million Daltons ...
