Chlorinated Hydrocarbons in Birds and Mammals

1983
The loss of raptor birds and in particular the peregrine falcon during the use of chlorinated hydrocarbons as pesticides has led to discussion of the means by which these compounds produced their effects. The effect of thinning the egg shells is well known and this may have been the major contribution to the change in reproductive capacity.

Chlorinated Hydrocarbons in Cetaceans

Journal of the Fisheries Research Board of Canada, 1975
DDT, PCBs, chlordane, and dieldrin levels were measured in blubber of 18 cetaceans, including humpback, sperm, dense-beaked, Atlantic, and Pacific pilot whales, and five species of dolphins. All had significant residue levels, ranging from 1.1 to 1023 ppm ΣDDT (wet weight basis), and 0.7–147 ppm PCBs. These levels are high enough to justify efforts to

Chlorinated hydrocarbons: oxidation in the biosphere

Environmental Science & Technology, 1982
The review explores the limitations imposed on the biological oxidation of some synthetic compounds, as determined from recent studies with enzymes which catalyze the oxidation of aromatic compounds. Examples are furnished of ways in which existing metabolic pathways can adapt to degrade, or partially degrade, a number of widely used synthetic ...

Chlorinated Hydrocarbon Insecticides

JAMA, 1964
THE PHYSICIAN, faced with an actual or potential case of intoxication from excessive absorption of an insecticide, may require guidance in the diagnosis and treatment of this relatively uncommon but potentially fatal condition. This brief note is intended only as such a guide to the management of poisoning arising from exposure to chlorinated ...
