Chloroplast Gene Expression—Translation
2014Translation has often been shown to represent the rate-limiting step of chloroplast gene expression. Genetic and biochemical analyses indicate that numerous nucleus-encoded protein factors in concert with their cognate target sites on chloroplast mRNAs are involved in determining protein-specific synthesis rates.

Chloroplast elongation factor Tu: Evidence that it is the product of a chloroplast gene in Euglena
Archives of Biochemistry and Biophysics, 1982Abstract The chloroplast protein synthesizing factor responsible for the binding of aminoacyl-tRNA to ribosomes (EF-Tuchl) has been identified in extracts of Euglena gracilis. This factor is present in low levels when Euglena is grown in the dark and can be induced more than 10-fold when the organism is exposed to light.

Genetically Altered Chloroplast Genes
1984Photosynthetic organisms are primary producers because they employ absorbed energy to fix gaseous CO2 into complex carbon compounds. Multicom-ponent centers for these complex reactions reside in the chloroplast, while the specific gene products involved are encoded in either the nuclear or chloroplast genomes.

Nuclear genes involved in chloroplast gene expression
1996Abstract Chloroplast biogenesis depends on the concerted action of two distinct genetic systems located in the nucleus and in the plastids. While the informational content of chloroplasts is well known from the complete sequences of several plastid genomes (1,2,3,4; Chapter 3), the role of nuclear genes involved in this process is less ...

Auxin promotes chloroplast division by increasing the expression of chloroplast division genes
Plant Cell ReportsAuxin stimulates chloroplast division by upregulating the expression of genes involved in chloroplast division and influencing the positioning of chloroplast division rings. Chloroplasts divide by binary fission, forming a ring complex at the division site.

The Chloroplast Nuclear Photosynthesis Genes
1984Conversion of solar energy to chemical energy, on which all organisms ultimately depend to sustain growth, occurs in chloroplasts. There currently is some evidence that the harvest index for cereal crops has reached its theoretical maximum via increased efficiency of grain production. Thus, further gains may not be possible unless plant productivity is

Chloroplast Genes and Transformation in Chlamydomonas
1983The green unicellular alga Chlamydomonas reinhardii is particularly well suited for studying the function of the chloroplast genome since this organism can be manipulated with ease both at the biochemical and genetic level. Indeed, C. reinhardii is to date the only organism in which an analysis of chloroplast gene recombination is feasible. Most of the

The Inheritance of Genes in Mitochondria and Chloroplasts
BioScience, 1976Among all the areas of biological science, genetics is one of the most beautifully exact and formal in its structure. The subject is built upon a framework of precisely formulated laws of great generality, and most of those laws are firmly grounded in mechanistic explanations in terms of the behavior of cells, chromosomes, and molecules.

Plastid Genes and Chloroplast Biogenesis
2019Plastids are the DNA-containing organelles with the widest range of different forms and functions. Interconversion between different plastid types implies marked changes in their architecture and physiology. In vascular plants chloroplast biogenesis from less-differentiated organelle forms occurs: in vegetation tips the differentiation process starts ...
