Cholecystosonography for the Diagnosis of Cholecystolithiasis
The gallbladder can be visualized by ultrasound (cholecystosonography) and gallstones seen as echo producing densities. Under cholecystosonographic observation the gallbladder can be demonstrated to contract following stimulation by cholecystokinin.

The differentiation of cholesterol and pigment gallstones [PDF]
Gallbladder biles and stones were obtained at 116 cholecystectomies for symptomatic gallstone disease. All 33 patients younger than 50 years had cholesterol stones, whereas 40% of the older patients had pigment stones.

A rare complication of cholecystolithiasis: perforation of the gallbladder
Common complications of cholelithiasis include gallbladder inflammation, cholangitis, and acute pancreatitis. On the other hand, rare complications include gallbladder carcinoma, gallstone ileus, Mirizzi syndrome and gallbladder perforation. Some patients with cholecystitis do not require hospitalization.
