Sterol imbalances and cholesterol‐24‐hydroxylase dysregulation is linked to the underlying progression of multiple sclerosis

open access: yesBrain Pathology
AbstractDisability worsening in multiple sclerosis (MS) is linked to neurodegeneration. Cholesterol homeostasis is essential for normal brain function. CYP46A1, crucial for brain cholesterol turnover and reduced in some neurodegenerative diseases, is a potential neuroprotective target.

Short-Term Circadian Disruption Impairs Bile Acid and Lipid Homeostasis in MiceSummary

open access: yesCellular and Molecular Gastroenterology and Hepatology, 2015
Background & Aims: Bile acids are physiologic detergents that also activate nuclear receptors to regulate glucose and lipid homeostasis. Cholesterol 7α-hydroxylase (Cyp7a1), the rate-limiting enzyme that converts cholesterol to bile acids, is ...

Reduced Mechanical Tactile Stimulation Under Space Microgravity Affects Synaptic Signaling and Contributes to Neuromuscular Aging in Caenorhabditis elegans

open access: yesThe FASEB Journal, Volume 40, Issue 12, 30 June 2026.
Microgravity (μG) reduces mechanical tactile stimulation in Caenorhabditis elegans, causing neuromuscular decline, altered gene expression, synaptic defects, and accelerated aging phenotypes. The gentle‐touch mechanoreceptor MEC‐4 mediates μG‐induced body length reduction and extracellular matrix gene downregulation.

Ileal bile acid transporter inhibition, CYP7A1 induction, and antilipemic action of 264W94

open access: yesJournal of Lipid Research, 2002
264W94 was designed to inhibit the ileal bile acid transporter (IBAT). Evaluated in vitro, 264W94 dose-dependently inhibited sodium-dependent uptake of 10 μM [3H]taurocholic acid (TC) by rat and monkey brush border membrane vesicles with IC50s of 0.24 μM

Colorectal cancer‐derived FGF19 is a metabolically active serum biomarker that exerts enteroendocrine effects on mouse liver

open access: yesMolecular Oncology, Volume 20, Issue 6, Page 1494-1512, June 2026.
Meta‐transcriptome analysis identified FGF19 as a peptide enteroendocrine hormone associated with colorectal cancer prognosis. In vivo xenograft models showed release of FGF19 into the blood at levels that correlated with tumor volumes. Tumoral‐FGF19 altered murine liver metabolism through FGFR4, thereby reducing bile acid synthesis and increasing ...

A Nanoparticle‐Integrated Complete Manufacturing Pipeline of Chemically Engineered Exosomes

open access: yesAdvanced Science, Volume 13, Issue 32, 9 June 2026.
We report a novel manufacture technology of chemically engineered exosomes. The four steps of manufacturing, i.e., biogenesis, loading, isolation, and storage, are integrated by the use of a nanoparticle. The manufacture technology incorporates three innovative components, i.e., a new nano‐bio effect, a new composite nanoparticle, and a new isolation ...

Effects and Interactions of Prenatal Ethanol Exposure, a Post-Weaning High-Fat Diet and Gender on Adult Hypercholesterolemia Occurrence in Offspring Rats

open access: yesCellular Physiology and Biochemistry, 2017
Background/Aims: Prenatal ethanol exposure (PEE) could induce intrauterine programming of hypothalamic-pituitary-adrenal axis-associated neuroendocrine metabolism, resulting in intrauterine growth retardation and susceptibility to adult ...

CYP46A1‐Targeted Treatment Alleviates Long‐Term White Matter Injury Following Traumatic Brain Injury by Promoting Cholesterol Metabolic Clearance and Remyelination

open access: yesCNS Neuroscience &Therapeutics, Volume 32, Issue 6, June 2026.
Our findings demonstrate that CYP46A1 plays a critical role in regulating cholesterol homeostasis in microglia and that the targeting of CYP46A1 may offer a viable therapeutic approach for traumatic brain injury (TBI). The CYP46A1 activator Efavirenz reduces white matter damage by increasing the levels of the cholesterol metabolite 24OHC, thereby ...

Appearance of atypical 3α,6β,7β,12α-tetrahydroxy-5β-cholan-24-oic acid in spgp knockout mice

open access: yesJournal of Lipid Research, 2003
Bile formation and its canalicular secretion are essential functions of the mammalian liver. The sister-of-p-glycoprotein (spgp) gene was shown to encode the canalicular bile salt export protein, and mutations in spgp gene were identified as the cause of
