Drinking elicited by cholinergic stimulation of CNS fibers

open access: closedPhysiology & Behavior, 1972
Abstract Carbachol, eserine and atropine were injected into limbic system sites in the brain of the rat. In previous studies, carbachol and eserine were found to elicit the drinking of water at identical loci in limbic system nuclei. Furthermore, atropine injection into one site has been found to inhibit drinking-to-carbachol in another site.

Organization and synaptic connections of cholinergic fibers in the cat superior colliculus

Journal of Comparative Neurology, 1993
AbstractThe cat superior colliculus (SC) receives a dense cholinergic input from three brainstem nuclei, the pedunculopontine tegmental nucleus, the lateral dorsal tegmental nucleus, and the parabigeminal nucleus (PBG). The tegmental inputs project densely to the intermediate gray layer (IGL) and sparsely to the superficial layers.

Cholinergic through-fibers in the rat superior cervical ganglion

open access: closedJournal of the Autonomic Nervous System, 1981

The length of hippocampal cholinergic fibers is reduced in the aging brain

Neurobiology of Aging, 2008
Cholinergic deficits occur in the aged hippocampus and they are significant in Alzheimer's disease. Using stereological and biochemical approaches, we characterized the cholinergic septohippocampal pathway in old (24 months) and young adult (3 months) rats.

Cholinergic Immunoreactive Fibres in Monkey Anterior Temporal Cortex

Cerebral Cortex, 1992
Cholinergic processes in anterior temporal cortex of rhesus monkeys were identified using immunocytochemical techniques for ChAT. Labeled fibers were present throughout the temporal pole and anterior aspects of the superior temporal, middle temporal, and inferior temporal gyri.

Nerve growth factor promotes collateral sprouting of cholinergic fibers in the septohippocampal cholinergic system of aged rats with fimbria transection

Brain Research, 1992
Nerve growth factor (NGF) was injected intraventricularly into aged (24 months) rats with unilateral fimbria transection. Controls received intraventricular injections of cytochrome c. A quantitative analysis of acetylcholinesterase (AChE)-positive fibers was used to evaluate whether the NGF treatment can stimulate regeneration and reinnervation of the

Regional differences in cholinergic activity of muscle fibers from the human gastroesophageal junction

American Journal of Physiology-Gastrointestinal and Liver Physiology, 1997
Muscles of the gastroesophageal junction that contribute to the lower esophageal sphincter (LES) include clasplike semicircular fibers on the right and slinglike oblique gastric fibers on the left. This study examined whether in vitro differences between the sling and clasp muscles could account for the in vivo asymmetry of LES pressure and its ...

Distribution of cholinergic and adrenergic nerve fibers in the lacrimal glands of dogs

American Journal of Veterinary Research, 1989
SUMMARY The distribution of postganglionic autonomic nerve fibers in the lacrimal gland and gland of the third eyelid of dogs was studied by use of histochemical techniques. Adrenergic nerve distribution was identified by use of the sucrose-potassium phosphate-glyoxylic acid technique.

Synergistic Effect of Serotoninergic and Cholinergic Nerve Fibers

Bulletin of Experimental Biology and Medicine, 2001
The mechanisms of interactions between various compartments of the autonomic nervous system were evaluated by studying sympathetic potentiation of vagal cardioinhibitory action. It was found that this effect is realized through preganglionic serotoninergic nerve fibers making synaptic contacts with intracardiac serotoninergic neurons.
