Tractography of the external capsule and cognition: A diffusion MRI study of cholinergic fibers

open access: yesExperimental Gerontology, 2019
White matter changes (WMC) in the cholinergic tracts contribute to executive dysfunction in the context of cognitive aging. WMC in the external capsule have been associated with executive dysfunction. The objectives of this study were to: 1) Characterize the lateral cholinergic tracts (LCT) and the superior longitudinal fasciculus (SLF).

Cholinergic neurons in the rat hippocampus do not compensate for the loss of septohippocampal cholinergic fibers

Neuroscience Letters, 1988
In recent studies a small number of choline acetyltransferase (ChAT)-immunoreactive, supposedly cholinergic, neurons intrinsic to the rat hippocampus have been described. Here we report that these neurons are not capable of sprouting in response to removal of the cholinergic input to the hippocampus from the medial septum/diagonal band complex.

Role of cholinergic fibers in a center essential to animal hypnosis

Brain Research Bulletin, 1991
We previously found that the center from which animal hypnosis is controlled in the rabbit is located in the area that includes the brachium conjunctivum and locus coeruleus (LC-BC) of the brainstem. Microinjection was used to investigate functions of cholinergic fibers in this area in relation to animal hypnosis.

Organization and synaptic connections of cholinergic fibers in the cat superior colliculus

Journal of Comparative Neurology, 1993
AbstractThe cat superior colliculus (SC) receives a dense cholinergic input from three brainstem nuclei, the pedunculopontine tegmental nucleus, the lateral dorsal tegmental nucleus, and the parabigeminal nucleus (PBG). The tegmental inputs project densely to the intermediate gray layer (IGL) and sparsely to the superficial layers.

Cortical cholinergic fibers in aging and Alzheimer's disease: A morphometric study

Neuroscience, 1989
A histochemical method for acetylcholinesterase was used to assess the regional density of acetylcholinesterase-rich (putatively cholinergic) axons in the cerebral cortex. A dense plexus of these fibers was observed in all cortical areas. The entorhinal, cingulate and inferotemporal regions were used for quantitative analysis.

Cholinergic and GABAergic fibers in the stria medullaris of the rabbit

open access: closedBrain Research Bulletin, 1977
Abstract After placing uni- and bilateral electrolytic lesions in the habenula (Hb), stria medullaris (SM), septum (Sep) and lateral preoptic area (LPA), activities of choline acetyltransferase (ChAc), acetylcholinesterase (AChE) and L-glutamic acid decarboxylase (GAD), which are the synthesizing and degradating enzymes of acetylcholine and the ...

Synergistic Effect of Serotoninergic and Cholinergic Nerve Fibers

Bulletin of Experimental Biology and Medicine, 2001
The mechanisms of interactions between various compartments of the autonomic nervous system were evaluated by studying sympathetic potentiation of vagal cardioinhibitory action. It was found that this effect is realized through preganglionic serotoninergic nerve fibers making synaptic contacts with intracardiac serotoninergic neurons.

Drinking elicited by cholinergic stimulation of CNS fibers

Physiology & Behavior, 1972
Abstract Carbachol, eserine and atropine were injected into limbic system sites in the brain of the rat. In previous studies, carbachol and eserine were found to elicit the drinking of water at identical loci in limbic system nuclei. Furthermore, atropine injection into one site has been found to inhibit drinking-to-carbachol in another site.

Cholinergic through-fibers in the rat superior cervical ganglion

Journal of the Autonomic Nervous System, 1981
