Conjugation of chondroitin sulfates with amines

Russian Journal of Bioorganic Chemistry, 2008
Conjugation of chondroitin sulfates with pharmacologically important amines in a water medium in the presence of 1-ethyl-3-[3-(dimethylamino)propyl]carbodiimide was studied. Conjugates with amide and isoureidocarbonyl groups were synthesized.

Biosynthesis of Chondroitin/Dermatan Sulfate

IUBMB Life, 2002
AbstractChondroitin sulfate and dermatan sulfate are synthesized as galactosaminoglycan polymers containing N ‐acetylgalactosmine alternating with glucuronic acid. The sugar residues are sulfated to varying degrees and positions depending upon the tissue sources and varying conditions of formation.

Synthesis of Chondroitin Sulfate Oligosaccharides and Chondroitin Sulfate Glycopeptides

2019
Chondroitin sulfate (CS) and chondroitin sulfate proteoglycan (CSPG) belong to the glycosaminoglycan (GAG) family, a class of poly-anionic glyco-conjugates widely expressed by animal cells. They play important roles in many biological events. Here, we summarize the main considerations in the design of chemical and enzymatic methodologies to access ...

Chondroitin Sulfate Proteoglycans in the Brain

2006
Publisher Summary Chondroitin sulfate proteoglycans (CSPGs) play important roles in the morphogenesis and maintenance of various tissues, including the central nervous system (CNS), through the interactions of their core proteins and/or chondroitin sulfate (CS) chains with cell adhesion molecules, extracellular matrix (ECM) molecules, and growth ...

Microbial production and metabolic engineering of chondroitin and chondroitin sulfate

Emerging Topics in Life Sciences, 2018
Several commercial uses and potential novel applications have recently been described for chondroitin sulfate (CS). However, the currently applied animal extractive procedure has a high environmental impact, which may become more profound especially in relation to the forecasted expansion of the CS market for applications as a food supplement ...

Antioxidant Activity of Chondroitin Sulfate

2006
Publisher Summary Molecules in biological systems often perform more than one function. Many structures have the ability to scavenge free radicals, acting in living organisms as antioxidants, although their main biological function is different. During oxidative stress, the increase in the concentration of these molecules seems to be a biological ...

Isolation and Purification of Chondroitin Sulfate

2006
Publisher Summary This chapter discusses methods for the isolation and purification of chondroitin sulfate (CS). This molecule is a sulfated glycosaminoglycan (GAG) composed of a linear polysaccharide chain with repeating disaccharides of defined structures that usually contain one hexosamine, one hexuronic acid, and a sulfate ester.

In Vitro Effects of Chondroitin Sulfate

2006
Publisher Summary A number of in vitro studies have been performed to determine the mode of action of chondroitin sulfate (CS). It has been demonstrated that CS possesses both anabolic effects on cartilage metabolism and anticatabolic properties. In various models of cartilage culture or of isolated chondrocytes, CS has demonstrated the capacity to ...

Chondroitin Sulfate and RBC Clumping

Archives of Ophthalmology, 1984
To the Editor. —Chondroitin sulfate is a new viscoelastic substance that is advocated as a protective agent for intraocular lens insertion. Chondroitin sulfate has been shown to be more effective in protecting the endothelium of animal and human corneas than other substances.1Contact of intraocular lenses with endothelium causes endothelial damage and
