Adaptation of the invasive pest Drosophila suzukii to a specialized nutritional niche

Unlike most Drosophila larvae that feed on spoiled food, Drosophila suzukii larvae thrive on ripening fruits and consequently face a low‐protein, high‐carbohydrate nutritional challenge. Comparisons of growth among D. suzukii, D. biarmipes, and D. melanogaster larvae across diets with varying protein‐to‐carbohydrate ratios demonstrate that D.

Microbiota‐Mediated Sequential Gallery Colonization by Adults and Larvae of an Invasive Bark Beetle

Integrative Zoology, EarlyView.
Dispersing adult beetles harbor more pinitol‐degrading microbes to colonize novel host pines with high levels of pinitol stress. These microbes from the beetle's exoskeleton and gut will be transmitted into the gallery via adults’ feeding and frass, whose proliferation in the gallery contributes to the formation of a low‐pinitol microhabitat.
