A multicassette Gateway vector set for high throughput and comparative analyses in ciona and vertebrate embryos. [PDF]

open access: yesPLoS ONE, 2007
BACKGROUND: The past few years have seen a vast increase in the amount of genomic data available for a growing number of taxa, including sets of full length cDNA clones and cis-regulatory sequences.

Massive Gene Loss and Function Shuffling in Appendicularians Stretch the Boundaries of Chordate Wnt Family Evolution

open access: yesFrontiers in Cell and Developmental Biology, 2021
Gene loss is a pervasive source of genetic variation that influences species evolvability, biodiversity and the innovation of evolutionary adaptations. To better understand the evolutionary patterns and impact of gene loss, here we investigate as a case ...

Gene expression in notochord and nuclei pulposi: a study of gene families across the chordate phylum

open access: yesBMC Ecology and Evolution, 2023
The transition from notochord to vertebral column is a crucial milestone in chordate evolution and in prenatal development of all vertebrates.

Wnt/β-catenin signaling is an evolutionarily conserved determinant of chordate dorsal organizer

open access: yeseLife, 2020
Deciphering the mechanisms of axis formation in amphioxus is a key step to understanding the evolution of chordate body plan. The current view is that Nodal signaling is the only factor promoting the dorsal axis specification in the amphioxus, whereas ...

A Pentaradial and Bilateral Combined Photoreception System in the Sea Cucumber is Mediated by a Blue Light‐Sensitive R‐Opsin

open access: yesAdvanced Science, EarlyView.
The sea cucumber Holothuria leucospilota detects blue and adjacent wavelengths of light via an r‐opsin with a maximum absorption at 459 nm. In the oral tentacles, papillae, and tube feet, distinct light‐sensing structures with specialized morphologies are formed, constituting a unique pentaradial and bilateral combined photoreception system.

Huntingtin gene evolution in Chordata and its peculiar features in the ascidian Ciona genus

open access: yesBMC Genomics, 2006
Background To gain insight into the evolutionary features of the huntingtin (htt) gene in Chordata, we have sequenced and characterized the full-length htt mRNA in the ascidian Ciona intestinalis, a basal chordate emerging as new invertebrate model ...

Partners or passengers? Revisiting the association between diatoms and aquatic animals

open access: yesBiological Reviews, EarlyView.
ABSTRACT Numerous studies have revealed the importance of research on the communities capable of colonizing animal surfaces (epibionts) and the animals on which they live (basibionts). Very few studies have considered epizoic diatoms, and there are gaps and biases in our knowledge, including the choice of basibionts, the methods used, and the habitats ...

Chordate Evolution in a New Light [PDF]

open access: yesCell, 2003
Gene expression studies in embryos often provide insights into evolutionary relationships across phyla. In this issue of Cell, Lowe et al. examine the patterning of the bilaterian nervous system by studying gene expression in a hemichordate, the acorn worm.

3D model of amphioxus steroid receptor complexed with estradiol [PDF]

open access: yes, 2009
The origins of signaling by vertebrate steroids are not fully understood. An important advance was the report that an estrogen-binding steroid receptor [SR] is present in amphioxus, a basal chordate with a similar body plan as vertebrates.
