Defining the role of αC helix interactions in the activation of the integrin αI domain

open access: yesThe FEBS Journal, EarlyView.
The α2I domain of the α2β1 integrin contains a distinctive αC helix and a conserved Arg288‐Glu318 ion pair that stabilizes the closed state of the domain. Disruption of this ion pair in the activated α2I variant unwinds the αC helix, which allows interaction with additional collagen‐binding sites increasing collagen binding.

Mast Cells in Host Defense Against Cutaneous Staphylococcus aureus Infection

open access: yesImmunology &Cell Biology, EarlyView.
Impact of S. aureus epicutaneous sensitization models on mast cell function in vivo. D. farinae and Staphylococcal enterotoxin B (SEB) activate Trpv1+ Tac1+ nociceptors to trigger the release of substance P (SP), which promotes mast cell degranulation through Mrgprb2. S.

Efficacy and safety of kinetic oscillation stimulation in the nasal cavity for the treatment of acute migraine attacks: A randomized, placebo-controlled, double-blind investigation

open access: yesCephalalgia Reports
Background Migraine attacks present a problem for patients who are unable to benefit from drug treatment. The Chordate System S020 delivers kinetic oscillation to the nasal mucosa, which is supposed to modulate the parasympathetic outflow involved in ...

Patterns of Proliferation in the Pacific Hagfish (Eptatretus stoutii) Retina Suggest an Ancient Origin for Adult Neurogenesis

open access: yesJournal of Comparative Neurology, Volume 534, Issue 10, October 2026.
The hagfish, a jawless early‐branching vertebrate, has very rudimentary eyes that are diminutive and oddly devoid of melanin pigment. Yet, the degenerate hagfish eye grows throughout life and expresses canonical genes of vertebrate retinal development. ABSTRACT Comparative morphology has revealed fascinating structural and organizational differences in

Surveying Biodiverse Coral Reef Ecosystems Across the Tree of Life With Environmental DNA

open access: yesMolecular Ecology Resources, Volume 26, Issue 7, October 2026.
ABSTRACT A central challenge in evaluating biodiversity using environmental DNA (eDNA) metabarcoding is that each primer set has biases resulting in selective amplification of taxonomic diversity. Here we test 11 primer pairs to assess Central Pacific coral reef diversity in the five kingdoms of marine eukaryotes: Chromista, Fungi, Metazoa, Plantae and

Hematopoiesis: A Layered Organization Across Chordate Species

open access: yesFrontiers in Cell and Developmental Biology, 2020
The identification of distinct waves of progenitors during development, each corresponding to a specific time, space, and function, provided the basis for the concept of a “layered” organization in development.
