Germ cell and other tumors in individuals with differences in sex development

open access: yesCA: A Cancer Journal for Clinicians, EarlyView.
Abstract Approximately one in 3500 to one in 5100 live‐born infants have atypical external genital development, known as differences in sex development (DSD). In 2005, an expert consensus conference thoroughly reviewed aspects of health care for individuals with DSD.

Induction of SOX17 with stimulation of WNT, TGF‐beta, and FGF signaling drives embryonal carcinomas into the yolk‐sac tumor lineage resulting in increased cisplatin resistance

open access: yesInternational Journal of Cancer, Volume 156, Issue 11, Page 2210-2224, 1 June 2025.
What's new? Yolk‐sac tumor formation has been suggested to be an escape mechanism during therapy in patients with relapsing germ cell tumors. The molecular mechanisms inducing yolk‐sac tumor development from stem cell‐like precursor embryonal carcinomas remain unclear.

MicroRNA‐371–373 cluster and methylome analysis suggests that a subset of ‘somatic‐type’ malignancies arising in germ cell tumors may originate in yolk sac tumor components

open access: yesThe Journal of Pathology, Volume 266, Issue 2, Page 160-176, June 2025.
Abstract Somatic‐type malignancies (SMs) arising in germ cell tumors (GCTs) are aggressive neoplasms resistant to systemic treatment. Most are diagnosed in metastatic sites after chemotherapy; however, they have also been well‐documented in primary testicular GCTs.

Enhancing the utility of placental pathology reports for clinical use

open access: yesPregnancy, Volume 1, Issue 3, May 2025.
Abstract Obstetric training programs typically offer limited formal education on placental pathology; yet, in practice, obstetric providers are expected to incorporate placental pathology findings into the overall evaluation of obstetric complications.

Primary choriocarcinoma of the vulva

open access: yesInternational Journal of Gynecological Cancer, 2001
Primary extrauterine choriocarcinoma is very rare, found mostly in the genital tract (tube, cervix, ovary, vagina). Other sites such as lungs, gastrointestinal tract, heart, brain and submentum also have been reported. A 31-year-old woman presented with abnormal uterine bleeding 6 weeks after her last menstrual cycle. Her HCG titer level was 900 mIu/ml.

A Comprehensive Review on LncRNAs/miRNAs‐DNMT1 Axis in Human Cancer: Mechanistic and Clinical Application

open access: yesJournal of Cellular and Molecular Medicine, Volume 29, Issue 10, May 2025.
ABSTRACT Cancer constitutes a significant public health concern, and addressing the challenge of cancer holds paramount importance and requires immediate attention. Epigenetic alterations, encompassing DNA methylation, have emerged as pivotal contributors to the development of diverse cancer types.

Replenishing co‐downregulated miR‐100‐5p and miR‐125b‐5p in malignant germ cell tumors causes growth inhibition through cell cycle disruption

open access: yesMolecular Oncology, Volume 19, Issue 4, Page 1203-1228, April 2025.
MiR‐99a‐5p/miR‐100‐5p (functionally identical) and miR‐125b‐5p microRNAs are downregulated in malignant germ cell tumors (GCTs). Combination replenishment of these microRNAs using mimics resulted in growth inhibition in representative cell lines, with consequent downregulation of target genes involved in cell cycle (confirmed by flow cytometry) and ...

MicroRNAs in seminal plasma are able to discern infertile men at increased risk of developing testicular cancer

open access: yesMolecular Oncology, Volume 19, Issue 4, Page 1188-1202, April 2025.
Male infertility is a known risk factor for the development of testicular cancer. In this paper, we analyzed the expression profile of a microRNA panel by real‐time PCR and validated the results by digital PCR. Experimental and bioinformatics analyses allowed us to identify possible biomarkers able to discern men with a higher risk of developing ...
