A Holocene landscape dynamic multiproxy reconstruction: How do interactions between fire and insect outbreaks shape an ecosystem over long time scales? [PDF]

open access: yesPLoS ONE, 2018
At a multi-millennial scale, various disturbances shape boreal forest stand mosaics and the distribution of species. Despite the importance of such disturbances, there is a lack of studies focused on the long-term dynamics of spruce budworm ...

Anti-Insect Secondary Metabolites from Fungal Endophytes of Conifer Trees

open access: yesNatural Product Communications, 2009
Choristoneura fumiferana is the most economically-important insect pest in eastern North America. Historically, strategies to control epidemics have relied on chemical pesticides that are no longer approved for use.

Effects of Spruce Budworm (Choristoneura fumiferana (Clem.)) Outbreaks on Boreal Mixed-Wood Bird Communities

open access: yesAvian Conservation and Ecology, 2009
This study examined the influence of a spruce budworm (Choristoneura fumiferana (Clem.)) outbreak on a boreal mixed-wood bird community in forest stands ranging in age from 0 to 223 yr.

The biological function of an insect antifreeze protein simulated by molecular dynamics

open access: yeseLife, 2015
Antifreeze proteins (AFPs) protect certain cold-adapted organisms from freezing to death by selectively adsorbing to internal ice crystals and inhibiting ice propagation.

Choristoneura fumiferana nucleopolyhedrovirus encodes a functional 3′–5′ exonuclease

open access: yesJournal of General Virology, 2004
The Choristoneura fumiferana nucleopolyhedrovirus (CfMNPV) encodes an ORF homologous to type III 3'-5' exonucleases. The CfMNPV v-trex ORF was cloned into the Bac-to-Bac baculovirus expression-vector system, expressed in insect Sf21 cells with an N-terminal His tag and purified to homogeneity by using Ni-NTA affinity chromatography.

Distinguishing eastern North American forest moth pests by wing-scale ultrastructure: potential applications in paleoecology

open access: yesFACETS, 2019
The use of fossil moth wing scales has recently been introduced as a new method to reconstruct population histories of lepidopterans and provide a proxy for insect disturbance.

Conservation planning integrating natural disturbances: Estimating minimum reserve sizes for an insect disturbance in the boreal forest of eastern Canada

open access: yesPLoS ONE, 2022
Large natural disturbances such as insect outbreaks and fire are important processes for biodiversity in forest landscapes. However, few methods exist for incorporating natural disturbances into conservation planning. Intact forest landscapes, such as in

Multi-Source Mapping of Forest Susceptibility to Spruce Budworm Defoliation Based on Stand Age and Composition across a Complex Landscape in Maine, USA

open access: yesCanadian Journal of Remote Sensing, 2022
Spruce budworm (Choristoneura fumiferana; SBW) outbreaks in the northeastern USA and Canada are recurring phenomena leading to large-scale mortality of spruce (Picea sp.) and balsam fir (Abies balsamea (L.) Mill.) forests as susceptibility to SBW is ...

Gene organization and sequencing of the Choristoneura fumiferana defective nucleopolyhedrovirus genome

open access: yesJournal of General Virology, 2005
Two distinct nucleopolyhedrovirus species of the eastern spruce budworm, Choristoneura fumiferana, exist in a symbiont-like relationship. C. fumiferana defective nucleopolyhedrovirus (CfDEFNPV) only infects C. fumiferana larvae per os in the presence of C.

Monitoring Spruce Budworm with Light Traps: The Effect of Trap Position

open access: yesPsyche: A Journal of Entomology, 2014
Daily records of adult spruce budworms, Choristoneura fumiferana (Clemens) (Lepidoptera: Tortricidae), captured at light traps at multiple locations in New Brunswick in the 1970s, are analyzed in relation to the physical position of light traps (tree ...
