ATYPICAL (UPWARD) COLOBOMA OF THE CHOROID

M., a woman, aged 27, came to the outpatient department of Mercedes Hospital on Jan. 18, 1930, complaining that for the last few months she had noticed that the sight of her left eye was poor. On examination the fundus of this eye was normal.

[Optic disk and choroidal coloboma].
Journal francais d'ophtalmologie, 1990Most of the optic nerve head abnormalities are clinically innocuous, but sometimes they can cause significant symptoms and lead to visual disturbance, or even to visual loss; optic pists can cause defects in the visual fields, not necessarily explicable by the serous maculopathy, that is the most important complication associated with optic pits.

Bilateral Coloboma of the Optic Disc and Choroid, with Coloboma of the Right Iris
American Journal of Ophthalmology, 1930In the right eye there was a coloboma of the iris downward, with a small cleft in the lens margin; and the ophthalmoscope disclosed a coloboma of the optic disc and choroid. In the left eye the iris was normal, but there was a choroidal coloboma only. Defect of vision was more marked in the right eye, and there was a horizontal nystagmus.

Detachment of Retina by Coloboma of Iris and Choroid
American Journal of Ophthalmology, 1926Three cases of this association of retinal detachment and congenital anomaly are here reported. In each case the fellow eye had long been blind and in one case was shrunken. The congenital condition may be transmitted by heredity.
