Expression of integrins on human choroidal neovascular membranes [PDF]

open access: yesJournal of Ocular Biology, Diseases, and Informatics, 2009
Most of the focus in choroidal and retinal angiogenesis centers on the regulation of endothelial function by soluble factors. Less well-understood, but nevertheless significant, is the regulation of endothelial cell function by its insoluble microenvironment, the extracellular matrix (ECM).

Choroidal neovascularization complicating epiretinal membrane removal [PDF]

open access: yesActa Ophthalmologica Scandinavica, 1997
AbstractPurpose: Surgical removal of epiretinal membranes generally leads to anatomic and functional improvement. Main complications include cataract, retinal breaks and detachment. We describe the onset of a juxtafoveal choroidal neovascularization 2 years after surgery of an epiretinal membrane. Methods: The neovascular membrane was treated by argon ...

Concurrent macular neovascularization in shallow irregular retinal pigment epithelium elevation phenotypes in age‐related macular degeneration and chronic central serous chorioretinopathy: A systematic review and meta‐analysis

open access: yesActa Ophthalmologica, EarlyView.
Abstract This systematic review and meta‐analysis synthesized the reported frequency of concurrent macular neovascularization (MNV) among selected eyes with author‐defined shallow irregular retinal pigment epithelium (RPE) elevations in age‐related macular degeneration (AMD) and chronic central serous chorioretinopathy (CSC).

Ocular Manifestations of Metabolic Syndrome: A Systemic Vascular Phenotype

open access: yesDiabetes, Obesity and Metabolism, EarlyView.
ABSTRACT Context Metabolic syndrome (MetS) is defined by central obesity, insulin resistance, hypertension and dyslipidemia. MetS affects over one‐third of US adults. Beyond its cardiovascular burden, MetS has clinically relevant associations with ocular health and may contribute to a systemic vascular and neuro‐metabolic phenotype involving the retina,

Retinopathy of Prematurity Is Associated With Reduced Thalamic Volume and Impaired Neurodevelopment. A Cohort Study

open access: yesJournal of Paediatrics and Child Health, EarlyView.
ABSTRACT Background Retinopathy of prematurity (ROP) is a neurovascular disorder that may affect not only the retina but also the brain structures involved in visual processing. The relationship between ROP severity and the volumetric development of these regions remains unclear.

Inhibition of VEGF‐Induced Angiogenesis and Vascular Leakage by Bicistronic Co‐Expression of Aflibercept and COMP‐Ang1

open access: yesAdvanced Healthcare Materials, Volume 15, Issue 35, 18 September 2026.
A bicistronic rAAV8 vector encoding Aflibercept (Afb) and COMP‐cAng1 simultaneously coordinates VEGF clearance and Tie2‐mediated vessel maturation. In a 3D angiogenesis‐on‐a‐chip model, rAAV8‐Afb/cAng1 effectively reverses pathological barrier breakdown under clinical disease‐mimicking challenges.

Sporadic Retinal Astrocytic Hamartoma Mimicking Retinoblastoma in a Child: A Case Report and Literature Review

open access: yesClinical Case Reports, Volume 14, Issue 9, September 2026.
ABSTRACT Retinal astrocytichamartoma (RAH) is a rare benign glial neoplasm most commonly associated with tuberous sclerosis complex (TSC). Sporadic cases, occurring in the absence of systemic phakomatosis, are uncommon and may closely mimic retinoblastoma, particularly when presenting with a calcified intraocular mass, creating a diagnostic challenge ...

Association of drusen deposition with choroidal intercapillary pillars in the aging human eye [PDF]

open access: yes, 2004
PURPOSE. To determine the pattern of drusen accumulation with age and to investigate the initial sites of deposition and their relationship to choroidal capillaries in human donor eyes from the eye bank of Moorfields Eye Hospital.METHODS.
