Angewandte Chemie, EarlyView.One bond makes the difference–two chiral and twisted polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs) show different emission behavior. The more flexible one (top) shows a double emission with one having a large anti‐Stokes shift. The two peaks are assigned to different conformers of one and the same compound.

Criteria based on Hume–Rothery rules are distinguished from those derived from thermodynamic relations. The formers are generally applicable to mechanically alloyed samples.
