Environmental niche models improve species identification in DNA barcoding

open access: yesMethods in Ecology and Evolution, Volume 15, Issue 12, Page 2343-2358, December 2024.
Abstract Recent advances in DNA barcoding have immeasurably advanced global biodiversity research in the last two decades. However, inherent limitations in barcode sequences, such as hybridization, introgression or incomplete lineage sorting can lead to misidentifications when relying solely on barcode sequences.

Unclear host taxonomy hinders parasite studies: An up‐to‐date checklist of the protozoan and metazoan parasites of Phoxinus minnows (Teleostei: Leuciscidae)

open access: yesJournal of Fish Biology, Volume 105, Issue 6, Page 1501-1539, December 2024.
Abstract Phoxinus minnows are small freshwater fish found throughout Eurasia. The taxonomy of this genus is still under investigation, and new species are regularly described. They are frequently introduced outside their native range due to their use as live bait for angling, and such fish introductions can have diverse impacts on the recipient areas ...

Geochemical and microbiological variability of aerobic and anaerobic sediments along a bifurcated sulphate‐saturated brine spring in western Canada

open access: yesThe Depositional Record, Volume 10, Issue 5, Page 637-669, November 2024.
A tufa mound developed in north‐east Alberta is characterised by an unusual emplacement of a gypsum caprock. This two‐tiered architecture resulted from the bicarbonate‐saturated groundwater flow along Upper Devonian limestone being redirected deeper and encountering the halite–anhydrite dissolution trend within the underlying Prairie Evaporite ...

A survey of nematode SmY RNAs. Editorial

open access: yes, 2022
S.5-8SmY RNAs are a family of similar to 70-90 nt small nuclear RNAs found in nematodes. In C elegans, SmY RNAs copurify in a small ribonucleoprotein (snRNP) complex related to the SL1 and SL2 snRNPs that are involved in nematode mRNA trans-splicing ...

Fish Gut Metabarcoding Detects Diets and Parasites Simultaneously

open access: yesEnvironmental DNA, Volume 6, Issue 6, November–December 2024.
Understanding dietary habits and trophic niches of species is crucial for the conservation and management of species and ecosystems. We applied a multimarker metabarcoding approach to assess the diet and parasites of commercially exploited beaked redfish (Sebastes mentella).

Phylogenomic Analysis of the Phylum Nematoda : Conflicts and Congruences With Morphology, 18S rRNA, and Mitogenomes

open access: yes, 2022
Phylogenetic relationships within many lineages of the phylum Nematoda remain unresolved, despite numerous morphology-based and molecular analyses. We performed several phylogenomic analyses using 286 published genomes and transcriptomes and 19 new ...

Another tool in the toolbox: Aphid‐specific Wolbachia protect against fungal pathogens

open access: yesEnvironmental Microbiology, Volume 26, Issue 11, November 2024.
Wolbachia infected more than 80% of Pentalonia aphids sampled across the Hawaiian Islands and other locations. The aphid‐specific M‐supergroup strains of this symbiont protected against a specialist fungal pathogen, Pandora, but not the generalist pathogen Beauveria or the parasitoid Aphidius colemanii.

A unique genetic code change in the mitochondrial genome of the parasitic nematode Radopholus similis

open access: yesBMC Research Notes, 2009
Background Mitochondria (mt) contain their own autonomously replicating DNA, constituted as a small circular genome encoding essential subunits of the respiratory chain.

Re‐evaluation of certain aspects of the EFSA Scientific Opinion of April 2010 on risk assessment of parasites in fishery products, based on new scientific data. Part 2

open access: yesEFSA Journal, Volume 22, Issue 11, November 2024.
Abstract The objective of this opinion was to determine if any wild caught fish species, originating from specific fishing grounds and consumed in the EU/EFTA could be considered free of zoonotic parasites. In this Opinion the term ‘fishery products’ only refers to fresh finfish.
