Ophiolite Chromite Deposits as a New Source for the Production of Refractory Chromite Sands

open access: yesSustainability, 2020
Chromite foundry sands, mixed with binding resins, are employed in the industry to form molds for high demanding casting of metals and steel. As there is no substitute, these sands highly contribute to placing chromium at the top value of the economic importance parameter in the EU classification of critical raw materials.

Design and Development of Knowledge Base Scheme for Chromite-based Resin Bonded Sand Core System

open access: yesProcedia Materials Science, 2014
Abstract An expert system is developed in the present paper to predict the mechanical properties of chromite-based resin bonded sand core system. The various properties of sand cores, such as hardness, compression strength, collapsibility, tensile strength, hot strength, shear strength and permeability depends upon numerous process parameters, viz ...

An Assessment of South African Chromite Sand Crushing Ratio

open access: yesInternational Journal of Metalcasting
Abstract Mechanical reclamation is the de facto method of sand recycling in most foundries used to limit sand dumping and adhere to environmental regulations. The latter metal casting imperatives align with the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals of Responsible Production (Goal 12 - Ensure sustainable consumption and production ...

Properties of furfuryl alcohol resins for conventional sand moulding and binder jetting applications [PDF]

open access: yesMATEC Web of Conferences, 2022
This paper compares two commercial acid-cured furfuryl alcohol resins. The first material is used for conventional sand moulding (CSM), while the second material was manufactured for the binder jetting process (BJP) using a Voxeljet VX 1000 printer.

OPTIMISATION OF A RESIN-COATED CHROMITE SAND FOR RAPID SAND CASTING APPLICATIONS

open access: yesSouth African Journal of Industrial Engineering, 2021
Applications of three-dimensional printing (3DP) to sand casting have been well-established in the last two decades. The preferred raw material is silica (quartz) sand, as it is the most readily available and cost effective sand. However, silica sand as a refractory material has some technical limitations, including high thermal linear expansion, low ...

SUSTAINABILITY ASSESSMENT OF THERMAL AND MECHANICAL RECLAMATION OF FOUNDRY CHROMITE SAND

open access: yesSouth African Journal of Industrial Engineering, 2022
After usage, foundry chromite sand is recycled to reduce production costs and comply with environmental regulations. Thermal and mechanical reclamation are the most prominent methods of sand recycling. The sand reclamation techniques used in the foundry sector are typically not evaluated through the green alternative or environmental sustainability ...
