Arabidopsis PCH2 Mediates Meiotic Chromosome Remodeling and Maturation of Crossovers

open access: goldPLOS Genetics, 2015
Meiotic chromosomes are organized into linear looped chromatin arrays by a protein axis localized along the loop-bases. Programmed remodelling of the axis occurs during prophase I of meiosis. Structured illumination microscopy (SIM) has revealed dynamic changes in the chromosome axis in Arabidopsis thaliana and Brassica oleracea.

Massive crossover suppression by CRISPR–Cas-mediated plant chromosome engineering [PDF]

open access: yesNature Plants, 2022
Abstract Recent studies have demonstrated that not only genes, but also entire chromosomes can be engineered using CRISPR-Cas9 1–5. A major objective of applying chromosome restructuring (CR) in plant breeding is the manipulation of genetic exchange 6.

Demonstration of targeted crossovers in hybrid maize using CRISPR technology

open access: yesCommunications Biology, 2022
Kouranov et al. demonstrate Cas12a-mediated targeted chromosomal crossover (CO) in transgenic hybrid maize plants and produce heritable crossover in F1 plants when Cas12a transgene is segregated away.

On the origin of crossover interference: A chromosome oscillatory movement (COM) model [PDF]

open access: goldMolecular Cytogenetics, 2011
It is now nearly a century since it was first discovered that crossovers between homologous parental chromosomes, originating at the Prophase stage of Meiosis I, are not randomly placed. In fact, the number and distribution of crossovers are strictly regulated with crossovers/chiasmata formed in optimal positions along the length of individual ...

Chromosome-Wide Characterization of Intragenic Crossover in Shiitake Mushroom, Lentinula edodes [PDF]

open access: goldJournal of Fungi, 2021
Meiotic crossover plays a critical role in generating genetic variations and is a central component of breeding. However, our understanding of crossover in mushroom-forming fungi is limited. Here, in Lentinula edodes, we characterized the chromosome-wide intragenic crossovers, by utilizing the single-nucleotide polymorphisms (SNPs) datasets of an F1 ...

Resolution of Joint Molecules by RuvABC and RecG Following Cleavage of the Escherichia coli Chromosome by EcoKI [PDF]

open access: yes, 2009
DNA double-strand breaks can be repaired by homologous recombination involving the formation and resolution of Holliday junctions. In Escherichia coli, the RuvABC resolvasome and the RecG branch-migration enzyme have been proposed to act in alternative ...

Zipping up the Synaptonemal Complex: Pathways to Homologous Chromosome Synapsis. [PDF]

open access: yesBioessays
The synaptonemal complex (SC) is a conserved protein structure that assembles between homologous chromosomes during meiosis. Here, we review pathways promoting homologous synapsis across model organisms, examining coordination with homolog pairing and recombination, spatiotemporal regulation of SC assembly, and the conserved molecular modules coupling ...

FIGNL1 Inhibits Non-homologous Chromosome Association and Crossover Formation

open access: yesFrontiers in Plant Science, 2022
Meiotic crossovers (COs) not only generate genetic diversity but also ensure the accuracy of homologous chromosome segregation. Here, we identified FIGNL1 as a new inhibitor for extra crossover formation in rice. The fignl1 mutant displays abnormal interactions between non-homologous chromosomes at diakinesis, and chromosome bridges and fragmentation ...

Meiotic chromosome structures constrain and respond to designation of crossover sites [PDF]

open access: goldNature, 2013
Crossover recombination events between homologous chromosomes are required to form chiasmata, temporary connections between homologues that ensure their proper segregation at meiosis I. Despite this requirement for crossovers and an excess of the double-strand DNA breaks that are the initiating events for meiotic recombination, most organisms make very

Meiotic Recombination Analyses in Pigs Carrying Different Balanced Structural Chromosomal Rearrangements. [PDF]

open access: yesPLoS ONE, 2016
Correct pairing, synapsis and recombination between homologous chromosomes are essential for normal meiosis. All these events are strongly regulated, and our knowledge of the mechanisms involved in this regulation is increasing rapidly.
