Obwohl die Herstellung von Seide der Seidenspinnerraupe Bombyx mori seit einigen tausend Jahren vom Menschen kontrolliert wird, hat erst die in den vergangenen Jahrzehnten entwickelten biotechnologischen Methoden den technischen Zugang zu Seiden vieler anderer Organismen ermöglicht.
