The Vulnerability of New Zealand Forage Plants to Incursions by New Pests, Pathogens and Weeds, and the Case for Greater Protection

open access: yesNew Zealand Journal of Agricultural Research, Volume 69, Issue 1, February 2026.
We outline the diversity of pests, weeds and plant pathogens absent from New Zealand that threaten forage production, examine their potential import pathways, and outline the challenges of managing them should they arrive. The number and diversity of threats and pathways indicates ongoing incursions are inevitable.

Biochemical and metabolic responses of cotton variety XLZ54 to Thrips tabaci and screening of resistance characterization indicators

open access: yesPest Management Science, Volume 82, Issue 2, Page 1656-1667, February 2026.
Cotton varieties resistant to Thrips tabaci exhibit lower soluble sugar and free amino acid levels, with smaller post‐infestation increases in these nutrients, resulting in reduced feeding rates and lighter damage. Key resistance evaluation indices include: damage severity, soluble sugars, free amino acids, soluble proteins, superoxide dismutase ...

New record of Orientus ishidae (Matsumura, 1902) (Hemiptera: Cicadellidae) in Bulgaria with notes on the distribution of Acanalonia conica (Say, 1830) (Hemiptera: Acanaloniidae)

open access: yesHistoria Naturalis Bulgarica
Orientus ishidae (Matsumura, 1902), a leafhopper species native to East Asia, has been increasingly reported in Europe due to its potential role as a vector of phytoplasmas affecting agricultural crops.

Balancing Barcoding and Genomics: gDNA Quality in Insect Vouchers After HotSHOT DNA Extraction

open access: yesMolecular Ecology Resources, Volume 26, Issue 2, February 2026.
ABSTRACT DNA extraction with an alkaline buffer system called ‘HotSHOT’ is widely used for barcoding because it is rapid, inexpensive, and voucher preserving, but it remains unclear whether sufficient genomic DNA (gDNA) remains in small vouchers for downstream use in genomics.

Species Diversity of Leafhoppers (Hemiptera: Cicadellidae) and Population Dynamics of Zyginidia sohrab (Zachvatkin, 1947) in Maize Fields of Bolu, Türkiye

open access: yesISPEC Journal of Agricultural Sciences
Maize is a globally important crop, with its productivity increasingly threatened by leafhopper species (Hemiptera: Cicadellidae), which cause direct feeding damage and transmit plant pathogens.
