Philasterides dicentrarchi (Ciliophora, Scuticociliatida): experimental infection and possible routes of entry in farmed turbot (Scophthalmus maximus)

Aquaculture, 2003
Philasterides dicentrarchi is a histophagous ciliate infecting turbot (Scophthalmus maximus) in aquaculture, where it causes significant economic losses. However, the route of entry of these parasites in turbot is not known. In the present study, we attempted experimental infection by seven routes: nasal, oral, rectal, branchial/dermal (i.e.

Euplotespora binucleata n. gen., n. sp. (Protozoa: Microsporidia), a Parasite Infecting the Hypotrichous Ciliate Euplotes woodruffi, with Observations on Microsporidian Infections in Ciliophora

Journal of Eukaryotic Microbiology, 2008
ABSTRACT. A new microsporidian species, Euplotespora binucleata n. gen., n. sp., from the brackish‐water ciliate Euplotes woodruffi is described and defined on the basis of life history characteristics, light and electron microscopic features, and small subunit (SSU) ribosomal DNA (rDNA) sequencing. The life cycle of E. binucleata n. sp.

Cryptocaryon irritans (Ciliophora): primary infection in thick‐lipped mullet, Chelon labrosus (Risso)

Journal of Fish Diseases, 1995
Abstract. Cryptocaryon irritans (Ciliophora), isolated from the reef fish, Grammistes sexlineatus Thumberg, was established as primary infections in mullet, Chelon labrosus (Risso). Only a small percentage (<22%) of exposed theronts established infection under controlled conditions. This is discussed in relation to the probability of host parasite

A new species of Trichodina Ehrenberg, 1830 (Ciliophora: Trichodinidae) infecting farmed Clarias gariepinus (Burchell) (Siluriformes: Clariidae) in Cuba

Systematic Parasitology, 2017
A new species of Trichodina Ehrenberg, 1830 collected from the skin and fins of farmed North African catfish Clarias gariepinus (Burchell) fingerlings, is described. The new species can be distinguished from other trichodinids by the characteristics of the adhesive disc, especially by the great number of denticles. Trichodina merciae n. sp.

Immobilization antigen-independent protection of olive flounder (Paralichthys olivaceus) against Philasterides dicentrarchi (Ciliophora: Scuticociliatia) infection

Aquaculture, 2008
To determine whether olive flounder (Paralichthys olivaceus) immunized with lysate of Philasterides dicentrarchi could be protected immobilization antigen (i-antigen) type independently, fish were immunized with lysate of ciliates obtained from in vitro cultures or ciliates obtained from infected fish.

Fusiforma themisticola n. gen., n. sp., a New Genus and Species of Apostome Ciliate Infecting the Hyperiid Amphipod Themisto libellula in the Canadian Beaufort Sea (Arctic Ocean), and Establishment of the Pseudocolliniidae (Ciliophora, Apostomatia)

Protist, 2013
A novel parasitic ciliate Fusiforma themisticola n. gen., n. sp. was discovered infecting 4.4% of the hyperiid amphipod Themisto libellula. Ciliates were isolated from a formaldehyde-fixed whole amphipod and the DNA was extracted for amplification of the small subunit (SSU) rRNA gene.

Influence of crude oil and pulp and paper mill effluent on mixed infections of Trichodina cottidarium and T. saintjohnsi (Ciliophora) parasitizing Myoxocephalus octodecemspinosus and M. scorpius

Canadian Journal of Zoology, 1994
Samples of longhorn sculpin (Myoxocephalus octodecemspinosus) were exposed to sediment contaminated with crude oil or pulp and paper mill effluent for periods up to 13 months in the laboratory. Other samples were collected at sites where crude oil or effluent from a pulp and paper mill are discharged. The intensity of gill infections of Trichodina spp.
