Barriers and framework conditions for the market entry of second-life lithium-ion batteries from electric vehicles

open access: yesHeliyon
Transition to circular economy for lithium-ion batteries used in electric vehicles requires integrating multiple stages of the value cycle. However, strategies aimed at extending the lifetime of batteries are not yet sufficiently considered within the ...

A Bibliometric Analysis of Publications in Uremic Toxins From 1991 to 2024

open access: yesTherapeutic Apheresis and Dialysis, EarlyView.
ABSTRACT Background Uremic toxins are a growing area of research in nephrology, with significant implications in the progression and treatment of chronic kidney disease (CKD) and the management of end‐stage kidney disease (ESKD). This bibliometric analysis aims to evaluate the global research trends, key contributors, and the impact of publications in ...

Serum Myonectin Levels Are Positively Associated With Physical Function and Lower Frailty‐Related Limitation in Maintenance Hemodialysis Patients: A Cross‐Sectional Study

open access: yesTherapeutic Apheresis and Dialysis, EarlyView.
ABSTRACT Background Maintenance hemodialysis (MHD) patients frequently suffer from frailty, characterized by reduced physical function and poor prognosis. Myokines, such as myonectin, secreted by muscle, are emerging regulators of systemic health. This study investigated the relationship between serum myonectin, adipokines (adiponectin, omentin), and ...

Advancing local circular economy of plastics from the ground up: a case study in Athens, Georgia, USA

open access: yesEnvironmental Research Communications
While production and consumption of plastics occur at a global, transboundary scale, cities are at the frontlines of waste management and pollution. This study applies the Circularity Assessment Protocol (CAP), to comprehensively assess plastic waste ...

Heritage Conservation and Environmental Protection: Conflicting Interests in a Case Study of Historic Box-Type Windows

open access: yesBuildings
Heritage conservation and environmental protection have similarities, both aiming at conserving structures and systems in their original state. While environmental protection prioritizes intact ecosystems, heritage conservation values past cultural ...

Comparative Evaluation of Hemodiafiltration, Hemoperfusion, and Standard Hemodialysis on Efficacy, Inflammatory Control, Dialysis Adequacy, and Safety in End‐Stage Renal Disease: A Prospective Observational Study

open access: yesTherapeutic Apheresis and Dialysis, EarlyView.
ABSTRACT Background Chronic micro‐inflammation in patients with end‐stage renal disease (ESRD) is a significant driver of cardiovascular complications and diminished quality of life. While standard hemodialysis (SHD) effectively manages small‐molecule clearance, its ability to remove medium‐to‐large uremic toxins—the primary catalysts of systemic ...

Transferrin receptor 1‐mediated iron uptake supports thermogenic activation in human cervical‐derived adipocytes

open access: yesFEBS Letters, EarlyView.
In this study, we found that human cervical‐derived adipocytes maintain intracellular iron level by regulating the expression of iron transport‐related proteins during adrenergic stimulation. Melanotransferrin is predicted to interact with transferrin receptor 1 based on in silico analysis.

A systematic review of nanocarriers used in medicine and beyond — definition and categorization framework

open access: yesJournal of Nanobiotechnology
Nanocarriers are transport and encapsulation systems that primarily serve to protect and improve the dispersibility of predominantly hydrophobic active ingredients but also enable their targeted delivery and controlled release at the site of action ...

The environmental performance of upcycling: A comparative life cycle assessment in the apparel industry

open access: yesNext Sustainability
To achieve a sustainable circular economy in the textile industry, the upcycling of post-consumer textiles is often recommended as a good solution. Yet, the actual environmental benefits of the upcycling processes remain to be further quantified.
