Understanding the circumgalactic medium is critical for understanding galaxy evolution [PDF]

open access: yes, 2019
The circumgalactic medium is a major reservoir of baryons and metals, playing a key role in the long cycles of accretion, feedback, and recycling of gas driving galaxy evolution. Fundamental progress on major issues in galaxy evolution depends critically

The impact of star formation feedback on the circumgalactic medium [PDF]

open access: yesMonthly Notices of the Royal Astronomical Society, 2016
We use idealized 3D hydrodynamic simulations to study the dynamics and thermal structure of the circumgalactic medium (CGM). Our simulations quantify the role of cooling, stellar feedback driven galactic winds and cosmological gas accretion in setting the properties of the CGM in dark matter haloes ranging from $10^{11}$ to $10^{12}$ M$_\odot$.

The Angular Momentum of the Circumgalactic Medium in the TNG100 Simulation [PDF]

open access: yesThe Astrophysical Journal, 2020
Abstract We present an analysis of the angular momentum content of the circumgalactic medium (CGM) using TNG100, one of the flagship runs of the IllustrisTNG project. We focus on Milky Way–mass halos (∼1012 M ⊙) at z = 0 but also analyze other masses and redshifts up to z = 5.

Galactic winds in cosmological simulations of the circumgalactic medium [PDF]

open access: yesMonthly Notices of the Royal Astronomical Society, 2013
(Abridged) We explore new observationally-constrained sub-resolution models of galactic outflows and investigate their impact on the circumgalactic medium (CGM) over redshifts z = 2 - 4. We perform cosmological hydrodynamic simulations, including star formation, chemical enrichment, and four cases of SNe-driven outflows: no wind (NW), an energy-driven ...

The hidden circumgalactic medium

open access: yes, 2019
The cycling of baryons in and out of galaxies is what ultimately drives galaxy formation and evolution. The circumgalactic medium (CGM) represents the interface between the interstellar medium and the cosmic web, hence its properties are directly shaped by the baryon cycle.

THE CIRCUMGALACTIC MEDIUM OF THE MILKY WAY IS HALF HIDDEN [PDF]

open access: yesThe Astrophysical Journal, 2015
We assess the fraction of the Milky Way's circumgalactic medium (CGM) eluding detection due to its velocity being similar to gas in the disk. This is achieved using synthetic observations of the CGM in a simulated MW-mass galaxy that shows similar CGM kinematics to the MW and external L$\sim$L$_*$ galaxies.

Regulation of Star Formation by a Hot Circumgalactic Medium

open access: yesThe Astrophysical Journal, 2023
Galactic outflows driven by supernovae (SNe) are thought to be a powerful regulator of a galaxy’s star-forming efficiency. Mass, energy, and metal outflows ( η _M , η _E , and η _Z , here normalized by the star formation rate, the SNe energy, and metal ...

Probing extreme black‐hole outflows on short timescales via high spectral‐resolution x‐ray imagers

open access: yesAstronomische Nachrichten, Volume 345, Issue 6-7, July-August 2024.
Abstract We investigate outflows and the physics of super‐Eddington versus sub‐Eddington regimes in black hole systems. Our focus is on prospective science using next‐generation high‐resolution soft x‐ray instruments. We highlight the properties of black hole ultraluminous x‐ray source (ULX) systems in particular. Owing to scale invariance in accreting

The imprint of dark subhaloes on the circumgalactic medium [PDF]

open access: yesMonthly Notices of the Royal Astronomical Society, 2020
ABSTRACT The standard model of cosmology, the Λ cold dark matter (ΛCDM) model, robustly predicts the existence of a multitude of dark matter ‘subhaloes’ around galaxies like the Milky Way. A wide variety of observations have been proposed to look for the gravitational effects such subhaloes would induce in observable matter.

The Panchromatic Circumgalactic Medium

open access: yes, 2019
Galaxies are surrounded by extended atmospheres, which are often called the circumgalactic medium (CGM) and are the least understood part of galactic ecosystems. The CGM serves as a reservoir of both diffuse, metal-poor gas accreted from the intergalactic medium, and metal-rich gas that is either ejected from galaxies by energetic feedback or stripped ...
