How restoration engineering measures can enhance the ecological value of intertidal flats

open access: yesRestoration Ecology, Volume 32, Issue 8, November 2024.
Restoration engineering measures, such as managed realignments or building groins, modify the environmental characteristics of coastal intertidal ecosystems. Creating physical modifications that are beneficial to an intertidal system's ecology necessitates an in‐depth understanding of the relationships between the abiotic and biotic components of a ...

Responses of the mesozooplankton community to marine heatwaves: Challenges and solutions based on a long‐term time series

open access: yesJournal of Animal Ecology, Volume 93, Issue 10, Page 1524-1540, October 2024.
This study uses 43 years of the Helgoland Roads time series, one of the world's richest marine datasets, and implements a novel BACI design, revealing season‐specific impacts of marine heatwaves on mesozooplankton in the North Sea. This highlights the importance of long‐term monitoring for understanding marine heatwave effects on communities.

Cladistic analysis of the Cirripedia Thoracica [PDF]

open access: yesZoölogical Journal of the Linnean Society, 1995
Abstract We present a cladistic analysis of the Cirripedia Thoracica using morphological characters and the Acrothoracica and Ascothoracida as outgroups. The list of characters comprised 32 shell and soft body features. The operational taxonomic units (OTUs) comprised 26 well-studied fossil and extant taxa, principally genera, since uncertainty about

Infestation of parasitic rhizocephalan barnacles Sacculina beauforti (Cirripedia, Rhizocephala) in edible mud crab, Scylla olivacea

open access: yesPeerJ, 2017
Screening of mud crab genus Scylla was conducted in four locations (Marudu Bay, Lundu, Taiping, Setiu) representing Malaysia. Scylla olivacea with abnormal primary and secondary sexual characters were prevalent (approximately 42.27% of the local screened

High‐Resolution Longitudinal eDNA Metabarcoding and Morphological Tracking of Planktonic Threats to Salmon Aquaculture

open access: yesEnvironmental DNA, Volume 6, Issue 5, September–October 2024.
In the current study, we present and assess an exhaustive approach to identify the planktonic drivers of farmed Atlantic salmon complex gill disease (CGD) and fish mortality. We explored delayed or “lagged” effects of plankton abundances on gill health and undertook a comparison of environmental DNA (eDNA) metabarcoding and microscopy in their ability ...

Diet of Ctenogobius shufeldti (Jordan and Eigenmann, 1887) (Teleostei, Gobiidae) in Guaratuba Bay, subtropical west Atlantic [PDF]

open access: yesBiotemas, 2011
The diet composition of the American freshwater goby, Ctenogobius shufeldti, was investigated in an estuarine area and two of its tributaries. 397 individuals, total length from 21 to 70mm, were sampled over a period of 12 months and their stomach ...

Studies on the Tetraclitidae (Cirripedia: Balanomorpha); new species of Tetraclita from the Red Sea [PDF]

open access: yes, 1999
The tetraclitid fauna at Elat, Israel, on the Gulf of Aqaba, Red Sea, consists of three morphologically distinct species. Tetraclita rufotincta Pilsbry, 1916 was reported previously from this region and may have been confounded with T. achituvi n.sp. and

Insights into the diet and feeding behavior of immature polar cod (Boreogadus saida) from the under‐ice habitat of the central Arctic Ocean

open access: yesJournal of Fish Biology, Volume 105, Issue 3, Page 907-930, September 2024.
Abstract Polar cod (Boreogadus saida) is an endemic key species of the Arctic Ocean ecosystem. The ecology of this forage fish is well studied in Arctic shelf habitats where a large part of its population lives. However, knowledge about its ecology in the central Arctic Ocean (CAO), including its use of the sea‐ice habitat, is hitherto very limited. To

First record of Chelonibia testudinaria (Linnaeus, 1758)) (Cirripedia: Chelonibiidae) in northern Chile

open access: yesGayana, 2022
The first record of the epibiont cirripedium of sea turtles, Chelonibia testudinaria (Linnaeus, 1758), is described for northern Chile (the second record for the species in the country), extending the distribution of this species by almost 10 ...
