Laparoscopic versus open colorectal surgery in the acute setting (LaCeS trial): a multicentre randomized feasibility trial

open access: yesBJS (British Journal of Surgery), Volume 107, Issue 12, Page 1595-1604, November 2020., 2020
The LaCeS feasibility trial has demonstrated that it is possible to evaluate laparoscopic surgery in the emergency colorectal setting within the context of an RCT. It has also shown that it is possible to recruit to a surgical trial in the emergency setting, with good compliance to trial procedures and processes, and overall acceptability by patients ...

Meta‐analysis of the impact of postoperative infective complications on oncological outcomes in colorectal cancer surgery

open access: yesBJS Open, Volume 4, Issue 5, Page 737-747, October 2020., 2020
Postoperative infective complications have significant negative effects on oncological outcomes in colorectal cancer. Anastomotic leakage has a negative effect on every measured outcome. New registries should include oncological outcomes and complications to facilitate future research and optimize outcomes.

Impact of extent of disease on 1‐year healthcare costs in patients who undergo cytoreductive surgery with hyperthermic intraperitoneal chemotherapy for colorectal peritoneal metastases: retrospective observational cohort study

open access: yesBJS Open, Volume 4, Issue 5, Page 954-962, October 2020., 2020
Well selected patients with colorectal peritoneal metastases can be treated with curative intent by cytoreductive surgery with hyperthermic intraperitoneal chemotherapy. Treatment‐related healthcare costs are significantly increased among patients with extensive peritoneal disease, although the associated survival gain is limited.

Intermittent pneumatic compression versus additional prophylaxis with enoxaparin for prevention of venous thromboembolism after laparoscopic surgery for gastric and colorectal malignancies: multicentre randomized clinical trial

open access: yesBJS Open, Volume 4, Issue 5, Page 804-810, October 2020., 2020
This RCT compared intermittent pneumatic compression (IPC) alone with IPC plus enoxaparin for 1 week after surgery in the prevention of venous thromboembolism (VTE) in patients undergoing laparoscopic surgery for gastric or colorectal malignancy. Although VTE occurred in 4·8 per cent of the ICP‐alone group and 3·3 per cent of the ICP with enoxaparin ...

Long‐term outcomes after perioperative treatment with omega‐3 fatty acid supplements in colorectal cancer

open access: yesBJS Open, Volume 4, Issue 4, Page 678-684, August 2020., 2020
Perioperative treatment with omega‐3 fatty acids (n‐3 FA) does not confer an overall survival benefit in patients undergoing colorectal cancer surgery, and neither is it associated with an increased efficacy of adjuvant chemotherapy. Clinicians should be careful when making any recommendations regarding the use of n‐3 FA oral nutritional supplements ...
