Citral a fragrance allergen and irritant
Contact Dermatitis, 2003Citral is a well known contact allergen and a contact irritant. Routine patch testing in the past may have been restricted because of possible irritant (IR) patch test responses. 586 consecutive patients, with hand eczema, were patch tested with a selection of fragrances including citral 2% petrolatum and the European standard series.

The antimicrobial activity of citral

MECHANISMS OF CITRAL PHOTOTOXICITY
Photochemistry and Photobiology, 1992Abstract—Citral, a monoterpene aldehyde synthesized by several plant genera, has been reported to exhibit antimicrobial activity. For the first time, we report that citral exhibits UV‐A (315–400 nm) light enhanced oxygen‐dependent toxicity against a series of Escherichia coli strains differing in DNA repair and catalase proficiency. Abstract Citral (I) is cyclized by UV irradiation 1 to 2-isopropenyl-5-methylcyclopentane-carboxaldehyde (II), containing the carbon skeleton of the monoterpenes of ants and catmint. 1,6,6-Trimethylbicyclo[2,1,1]hexane-2α-carboxaldehyde (XII, R = H), produced in lesser amount at the same time, was synthesized from camphor.
