Implications of the expression of Enterococcus faecalis citrate fermentation genes during infection. [PDF]
Citrate is an ubiquitous compound in nature. However, citrate fermentation is present only in a few pathogenic or nonpathogenic microorganisms. The citrate fermentation pathway includes a citrate transporter, a citrate lyase complex, an oxaloacetate ...

Discrete breathers in nonlinear network models of proteins
We introduce a topology-based nonlinear network model of protein dynamics with the aim of investigating the interplay of spatial disorder and nonlinearity. We show that spontaneous localization of energy occurs generically and is a site-dependent process.

Phosphodiesterase Type 5 Inhibitors, Sport and Doping [PDF]
Phosphodiesterase type 5 inhibitors (PDE5i) (e.g., sildenafil, tadalafil, vardenafil, and avanafil) are drugs commonly used to treat erectile dysfunction, pulmonary arterial hypertension, and benign prostatic hyperplasia.

Aggregation Prevention Assay for Chaperone Activity of Proteins Using Spectroflurometry
The ability to stabilize other proteins against thermal aggregation is one of the major characteristics of chaperone proteins. Molecular chaperones bind to nonnative conformations of proteins.

Purification and properties of citrate synthase from Acetobacter europaeus [PDF]
Citrate synthase (EC 4.1.3.7) was purified from the acidophilic bacterium Acetobacter europaeus to electrophoretic homogeneity. The specific activity was 228 units/mg of protein during the exponential ethanol-oxidation growth phase.

Coordinated balancing of muscle oxidative metabolism through PGC-1α increases metabolic flexibility and preserves insulin sensitivity [PDF]
The peroxisome proliferator-activated receptor γ coactivator 1α (PGC-1α) enhances oxidative metabolism in skeletal muscle. Excessive lipid oxidation and electron transport chain activity can, however, lead to the accumulation of harmful metabolites and ...
