Erectile dysfunction - an update of current practice and future strategies [PDF]

open access: yes, 2013
Erectile dysfunction (ED) is defined as the inability to achieve and maintain a penile erection adequate for satisfactory sexual intercourse.1 Up to 150 million men worldwide suffer from ED and this figure is likely to double by the year 2025.2 A number

The Mitochondrial Guardian α‐Amyrin Mitigates Alzheimer's Disease Pathology via Modulation of the DLK‐SARM1‐ULK1 Axis

open access: yesAdvanced Science, EarlyView.
Dietary habits play a key role in chronic diseases, and higher annual consumption of fruit and vegetable may lower risk of dementia. Artificial intelligence predicts the lipid‐like compound α‐Amyrin (αA) from plants with edible peels as a drug candidate against Alzheimer's disease.

Essential lipid autacoids rewire mitochondrial energy efficiency in metabolic dysfunction‐associated fatty liver disease

open access: yesHepatology, EarlyView., 2022
Increased liver content of DHA‐derived small lipid autacoids (i.e resolvin D1 and maresin 1) associates with enhanced mitochondrial oxidative phosphorylation, fatty acid β‐oxidation and bioenergetic metabolic flux. These features provide hepatic protection from steatotic, pro‐inflammatory and fibrogenic insults.

Determination of acetyl coenzyme A. Interference by a contaminant in malate dehydrogenase

open access: yesJournal of Lipid Research, 1972
Spectrophotometric determinations of acetyl CoA with malate dehydrogenase and citrate synthase are likely to overestimate the amount of acetyl CoA in solutions containing acetoacetyl CoA, since commercial preparations of malate dehydrogenase may contain ...

Hyperinsulinism in short-chain L-3-hydroxyacyl-CoA dehydrogenase deficiency reveals the importance of beta-oxidation in insulin secretion [PDF]

open access: yes, 2001
A female infant of nonconsanguineous Indian parents presented at 4 months with a hypoglycemic convulsion. Further episodes of hypoketotic hypoglycemia were associated with inappropriately elevated plasma insulin concentrations.

A rhodanine agent active against non-replicating intracellular Mycobacterium avium subspecies paratuberculosis. [PDF]

open access: yes, 2009
BACKGROUND: Antibiotic therapy targeting chronic mycobacterial disease is often ineffective due to problems with the emergence of drug resistance and non-replicating persistent intracellular antibiotic resistant phenotypes.

PTG‐Dependent Glycogen Metabolic Dysfunction Drives Impaired Adipose Browning: A Novel Mechanism Linking PM2.5 to Metabolic Disorders

open access: yesAdvanced Science, EarlyView.
This study provides the first evidence that PM2.5 impairs iWAT browning via PTG‐mediated glycogen metabolism disruption, which is initiated by ADRB3 inhibition and subsequently triggers VEGFB upregulation. It thereby delineates the ADRB3‐PTG‐VEGFB axis as central to PM2.5‐induced metabolic dysfunction and identifies adipose glycogen metabolism as a ...

The NADPH oxidase NOX4 regulates redox and metabolic homeostasis preventing HCC progression

open access: yesHepatology, EarlyView., 2022
Loss of NOX4 in HCC tumor cells induces metabolic reprogramming in a Nrf2/MYC‐dependent manner to promote HCC progression. Abstract Background and Aims The NADPH oxidase NOX4 plays a tumor‐suppressor function in HCC. Silencing NOX4 confers higher proliferative and migratory capacity to HCC cells and increases their in vivo tumorigenic potential in ...

Citrate Promotes Nitric Oxide Production during Human Sperm Capacitation

open access: yesAntioxidants
Sperm capacitation is a complex process essential for the spermatozoon to recognize and fertilize the oocyte. For capacitation to occur, human spermatozoa require low levels of reactive oxygen species (ROS), increased protein tyrosine phosphorylation ...

Artificial citrate operon confers mineral phosphate solubilization ability to diverse fluorescent pseudomonads. [PDF]

open access: yesPLoS ONE, 2014
Citric acid is a strong acid with good cation chelating ability and can be very efficient in solubilizing mineral phosphates. Only a few phosphate solubilizing bacteria and fungi are known to secrete citric acids. In this work, we incorporated artificial
