Kant's Metaphysics of Race, Its Distinctiveness, and Its Normativity
ABSTRACT Drawing on the contemporary taxonomy of the metaphysics of race, this paper shows that Kant's theory of race occupies a distinct metaphysical position on race. Second, it argues that Kant's metaphysics of race inherently produces racist claims.

Parsimony, homology and the continuity of stone tool use in the hominin clade
Whether the last common ancestor (LCA) of Homo and Pan (ca. 6–7 Ma) used stone tools is a foundational question in palaeoanthropology. However, it is often treated as known rather than as a hypothesis requiring substantiation. Lacking fossil evidence for

Abstract Mushrooms are a ubiquitous and essential component in our biological environment and have been of interest to humans around the globe for millennia. Knowledge about mushrooms represents a prime example of cumulative culture, one of the key processes in human evolution.

Cladistics with geometric morphometric data: The variability of the calvarium in the genus Homo
Over the last 30 years, several protocols to adapt 3D geometric morphometric data to cladistics have been developed. Strongly criticised, these protocols are only occasionally used in palaeoanthropology, despite the obvious heuristic potential of such an

The relationship between form and function of the carnivore mandible
Abstract Dietary morphology diversified extensively in Carnivoraformes (living Carnivora and their stem relatives) during the Cenozoic (the last 66 million years) as they evolved to capture, handle, and process new animal and plant diets. We used 3D geometric morphometrics, mechanical advantage, and finite element analysis to test the evolutionary ...

This study reports the complete chloroplast genome of Salvia reflexa and compares it with those of other invasive and non‐invasive Salvia species to explore genomic features associated with invasiveness. The chloroplast genome exhibits a typical quadripartite structure and shows high conservation within the genus, while several hypervariable regions ...

A new species of Proshapalopus Mello-Leitão, 1923, distributed in the Southwest Colombia in the Chocó Region, is described. A morphological cladistic analysis based on the previous matrix of a Theraphosinae group confirmed the inclusion of this species ...

Why biogeographical hypotheses need a well supported phylogenetic framework: a conceptual evaluation
A growing number of biogeographical methods have attempted to describe formal means of reconstructing the biogeographical history of the organisms. Whatever the biogeographical method, however, the source of systematic information has to be well worked ...

ABSTRACT Four new species of Ibaloniinae harvestmen are described from the Solomon Islands, Melanesia. Based on the original diagnosis of Euibalonius Roewer, 1915, and description of E. maculatus (Roewer, 1915), this material appeared related to that genus. However, examination of syntype photographs of the type species E.

Public DNA barcoding data resolve the status of the genus Arboricaria (Araneae: Gnaphosidae)
An analysis of public DNA barcoding data confirms that the extraction of Arboricaria Bosmans, 2000 from the genus Micaria Westring, 1851 would require the division of Micaria into at least five (and probably more) individual genera, to restore the ...
