Scavenging Attraction of a Cyclopoid Copepod to Zooplankton Carcasses
We experimentally demonstrated that a cyclopoid copepod, Thermocyclops taihokuensis, can function as a planktonic scavenger in freshwater ecosystems. T. taihokuensis actively approached and attacked cladoceran carcasses and was attracted to carcass‐derived chemical cues, indicating that chemical cues are key for detecting carcasses.
