Class 1 Integrons, Gene Cassettes, Mobility, and Epidemiology
European Journal of Clinical Microbiology & Infectious Diseases, 1999Integrons are genetic elements that, although unable to move themselves, contain gene cassettes that can be mobilized to other integrons or to secondary sites in the bacterial genome. The majority of approximately 60 known gene cassettes encode resistance to antibiotics. Recently, a number of gene cassettes encoding extended-spectrum beta-lactamases or

The antimicrobial resistance and the character of integrons were determined in 58 Shigella flexneri strains isolated from China. All isolates were multi-drug resistant and found to carry integrons of class 1 (94.8%), class 2 (100%), or both (94.8%). No intI3 was detected.

Distribution of class 1 integrons in a highly impacted catchment.
Science of The Total Environment, 2016Polluted compounds into freshwater sediments may select and enrich bacteria carrying specific genetic compositions. Here we examine the possible use of class 1 integrons as bioindicators in freshwater environments. Samples were collected from various sediments in an urban area (Zhangye, Gansu province, China), specifically within the city, in the ...

Temperature affects variations of class 1 integron during sludge anaerobic digestion
Bioresource Technology, 2022Revealing class 1 integron characteristics under different operating conditions is of great importance to control antibiotic resistance genes (ARGs) during sludge anaerobic digestion (AD). This study investigated the variations of class 1 integrons and the ARGs carried by class 1 integrons in anaerobic sludge digesters under 25 °C, 35 °C, and 55 °C ...

Distribution of class 1 integrons among enteropathogenicEscherichia coli
Canadian Journal of Microbiology, 2012The aim of this study was to investigate the incidence of and resistance gene content of class 1 integrons among enteropathogenic Escherichia coli (EPEC) and non-EPEC and to investigate intraspecies genetic diversity of EPEC strains isolated from children with diarrhea in Iran.

A comparative study of class 1 integrons in Acinetobacter baumannii
Gene, 2014Multidrug resistance (MDR) in Acinetobacter baumannii is increasingly reported and has become a significant public concern. The method responsible for the acquisition of resistance genes via integrons from the environment or intra-species in A. baumannii remains to be understood.

During 2003 to 2004, class 1 integron was detected in 8 out of 10 tested enterococci isolates, with 2 of them positive for class 2 integron. This is the first report of class 2 integron in Enterococcus faecalis and class 1 integron in Enterococcus faecium.
