A reduced-order extrapolating collocation spectral method based on POD for the 2D Sobolev equations

open access: yesBoundary Value Problems, 2019
In this paper, we mainly use a proper orthogonal decomposition (POD) to reduce the order of the coefficient vectors of the solutions for the classical collocation spectral (CS) method of two-dimensional (2D) Sobolev equations.

‘Classic papers’ in this issue of Acta Radiologica [PDF]

open access: yesActa Radiologica, 2016
In this issue of Acta Radiologica we present two articles written by two pioneers from the early years. The first article was written by the Norwegian surgeon Christian Magnus Falsen Sinding-Larsen (Fig. 1). SindingLarsen was born in 1866 in Oslo (at that time named Kristiania), and obtained his MD in 1891.

Lipopolysaccharide uptake is augmented in lipopolysaccharide‐tolerant mouse macrophage‐like cells via increased CD14 expression

open access: yesFEBS Open Bio, EarlyView.
In normal (nontolerant) cells, CD14 is crucial for both LPS uptake and LPS signaling. In LPS‐tolerant cells, in which LPS‐induced TNF‐α and IFN‐β production is suppressed, there is a dramatic increase in surface CD14 expression. The overexpressed CD14 in LPS‐tolerant cells is responsible for the enhanced LPS uptake without inducing pro‐inflammatory ...

Methodological Decision-Making in Classic Grounded Theory: Preserving Emergence Without Forcing

open access: yesInternational Journal of Qualitative Methods
Classic grounded theory (Classic GT) is commonly described as an emergent methodology in which analytic direction unfolds naturally through constant comparison. While this characterisation reflects the epistemological intent of Classic GT, it can obscure

Hyperactive ice‐binding proteins stabilize cell membranes and improve resistance to dehydration stress in Caenorhabditis elegans

open access: yesFEBS Open Bio, EarlyView.
TisIBP8, a fungal‐derived hyperactive ice‐binding protein, helps Caenorhabditis elegans survive dehydration. It localizes near cell membranes, reduces cell damage, and helps maintain membrane structure during drying. These results suggest that ice‐binding proteins can protect cells from dehydration stress as well as freezing stress.

Inflationary schism

open access: yesPhysics Letters B, 2014
Classic inflation, the theory described in textbooks, is based on the idea that, beginning from typical initial conditions and assuming a simple inflaton potential with a minimum of fine-tuning, inflation can create exponentially large volumes of space ...

The novel self-organizing map combined with fuzzy C-means and K-means convolution for a soft and hard natural digital image segmentation [PDF]

open access: yesAUT Journal of Mathematics and Computing
Digital image segmentation plays an important role in noise reduction and pixel clustering for pre-processing of deep learning or feature extraction. The classic Self-Organizing Map (SOM) algorithm is a well-known unsupervised clustering neural network ...

Protocol for quantifying miRNA trafficking across the endosomal membrane

open access: yesFEBS Open Bio, EarlyView.
An in vitro protocol measures miRNA uptake into endosomes isolated from mammalian cell extracts, which are free of subcellular contaminants. Performed at 37 °C in the presence of ATP, it ensures the import of single‐stranded miRNA into the endosomal lumen.
