Abstract The theological claims called Arminianism were, in 18th‐century New England at least, attached to a set of economic, social, and political ideas as well. In questions of wealth and class, race, and gender, Arminians, including William Bentley, were also subscribers to the ideology of classical liberalism.

Nowadays, the term liberalism can mean one thing or its opposite; therefore it is necessary to take time to introduce “classical liberalism.” It may perhaps appear odd to start a book on IR theory with a description of “domestic” classical liberalism. However, this is both logical and necessary.
