Additive Manufacturing of NiTi Shape Memory Alloys for Elastocaloric Applications: A Review

open access: yesAdvanced Functional Materials, EarlyView.
Additive manufacturing enables complex NiTi architectures that overcome key limitations in elastocaloric refrigeration, including poor heat transfer and high mechanical work input. This review surveys recent advances in LPBF‐ and DED‐fabricated NiTi shape memory alloys for elastocaloric applications, highlighting process–structure–performance ...

Solvent‐Free Manufacturing of Multifunctional Gas Diffusion Electrode Architectures for Enhanced CO2 Conversion From Low‐Concentration Streams

open access: yesAdvanced Functional Materials, EarlyView.
A tandem gas diffusion electrode (GDE) leveraging hierarchically engineered microgranules enables efficient CO2 electroreduction under dilute CO2 conditions. A key innovation lies in the solvent‐free precision assembly of metal–organic‐frameworks, carbon nanotubes, and copper nanoparticles.

Stratospheric gravity waves in a post-limb sounder era: can GNSS-RO be used to extend the SABER QBO-driving record? [PDF]

open access: yesAtmospheric Measurement Techniques
The quasi-biennial oscillation (QBO) is a slowly repeating cycle of winds which dominates tropical lower-stratospheric dynamics and has been described as the “heartbeat of the stratosphere”. However, it is challenging to represent in weather and climate

The political economy of climate adaptation [PDF]

open access: yesNature Climate Change, 2015
Initiatives to adapt to the effects of climate change are growing in number but may fail to achieve the desired outcomes unless critical competing interests are taken into account during the planning process.

Characterization of an Injectable Poly(vinyl alcohol)‐gelatin Hydrogel for Growth Factor Delivery in an Orthopedic Application

open access: yesAdvanced Healthcare Materials, EarlyView.
This work introduces photo‐crosslinkable tyraminated poly(vinyl alcohol)‐gelatin (PVA‐GT) hydrogels as tunable injectable platforms for tissue engineering and growth factor delivery applications. This schematic illustrates the two developed hydrogel formulations and the experimental workflow used to evaluate their physico‐chemical properties in vitro ...

Small Extracellular Vesicles from Neural Cells: Physiological and Pathological Roles, and Potential in Neurodegenerative Therapy

open access: yesAdvanced Healthcare Materials, EarlyView.
Neural cell–derived small extracellular vesicles (sEVs) are emerging as pivotal mediators in neurodegenerative diseases, exerting both pathogenic and therapeutic functions. This review synthesizes current evidence on how sEVs from distinct neural cell types regulate neurodegeneration, neuroprotection, biomarker discovery, and targeted drug delivery ...

Harmonizing Climate Change Mitigation and Adaptation in Transportation and Land-Use Planning in California Cities [PDF]

open access: yes, 2020
: Recent extreme weather events in California—wildfires, drought, and flooding—make abundantly clear the need to plan effective responses to both the causes and the consequences of climate change. A central challenge for climate planning efforts has been

Oxygen Supply of Islets of Langerhans by Photosynthetically Active Microalgae in Bioprinted Co‐Cultures Maintains Their Function in a Hypoxic Environment

open access: yesAdvanced Healthcare Materials, EarlyView.
This study developed a bioprinted co‐culture system embedding rat pancreatic islets and Scenedesmus sp. microalgae spatially defined in close vicinity. Red light was found optimal to ensure microalgal photosynthesis while maintaining islet viability and functionality. A tailored co‐culture medium supported both cell types.
