Systems Innovation, Inertia and Pliability: A mathematical exploration with implications for climate change abatement [PDF]

open access: yes, 2018
This paper develops a stylised mathematical interpretation of innovation and inertia in economic systems, characteristics which feature in economics literature traceable back at least to Schumpeter and other economic theorists of innovation, as well as economic historians.

Frailty Predicts Incident Osteoporotic Fractures in Veterans with Rheumatoid Arthritis

open access: yesArthritis Care &Research, EarlyView.
Objective Rheumatoid arthritis (RA) is associated with an increased risk of frailty and osteoporosis, but the relationship between frailty and incident osteoporotic fractures in RA is underexplored. Methods Data were from the Veterans Affairs (VA) Rheumatoid Arthritis Registry. Frailty was measured using the VA Frailty Index (VAFI).

Associations of Frailty with the Risk of Incident Cancer and Cancer‐related Mortality in Veterans with Rheumatoid Arthritis

open access: yesArthritis Care &Research, Accepted Article.
Objective To investigate the association between frailty and cancer incidence and mortality in patients with rheumatoid arthritis (RA). The study aimed to identify how frailty influences cancer risk, and cancer‐specific outcomes. Methods This retrospective cohort study analyzed data from the Veterans Affairs Rheumatoid Arthritis (VARA) registry (2002 ...

Current Status and Challenges in Data Collection for Aerospace Coatings Deposited by Plasma Spraying

open access: yesAdvanced Engineering Materials, EarlyView.
An innovative approach has been integrated into the GRENAT project to optimize plasma spraying and coating performance. Raw materials are accelerated and melted in the plasma generated by torches, creating coatings. Monitoring sensors collect process data which are combined with ex situ characterization data.

Dynamical drivers of free-tropospheric ozone increases over equatorial Southeast Asia [PDF]

open access: yesAtmospheric Chemistry and Physics
Positive trends in tropical free-tropospheric (FT) ozone are frequently ascribed to emissions growth, but less is known about the effects of changing dynamics.

Laser‐Induced Graphene from Waste Almond Shells

open access: yesAdvanced Functional Materials, EarlyView.
Almond shells, an abundant agricultural by‐product, are repurposed to create a fully bioderived almond shell/chitosan composite (ASC) degradable in soil. ASC is converted into laser‐induced graphene (LIG) by laser scribing and proposed as a substrate for transient electronics.
