Financing Climate Futures [PDF]

open access: yes, 2018
Infrastructure worldwide has suffered from chronic under-investment for decades and currently makes up more than 60% of greenhouse gas emissions. A deep transformation of existing infrastructure systems is needed for both climate and development, one that includes systemic conceptual and behavioral changes in the ways in which we manage and govern our ...

From Waste to Value: Conversion of Calcium Sulfate to Vaterite via Carbon Capture and Storage

open access: yesAdvanced Functional Materials, EarlyView.
This study introduces a new concept for carbon management that relies on the carbonation of industrial gypsum waste and yields phase‐pure vaterite at ambient conditions without any additives. The obtained vaterite is further shown to be a reactive material that develops compressive strength in aqueous suspensions like conventional cements.

Self‐Feeding of Engineered Tissues via Controlled Glucose Release Facilitates Survival and Vascularization of Living Implants

open access: yesAdvanced Functional Materials, EarlyView.
ABSTRACT Engineering living matter has great clinical potential to deliver functional replacement organs. However, clinical translation remains hampered by the current inability to maintain viability of clinically relevant‐sized constructs. During the pre‐vascular phase, implants rely on nutrient diffusion for survival, which is insufficient at ...

Prenucleation Species Dictate Foreign Ion Incorporation in the Biomineral Precursor Amorphous Calcium Carbonate

open access: yesAdvanced Functional Materials, EarlyView.
ACC forms via aggregating prenucleation clusters that gatekeep its chemical composition. Ion identity steers the path: Ba and Sr substitute Ca in clusters, thereby inhibiting nucleation, with a dose‐dependent switch of Sr to induction. Mg partitions into Mg‐rich and Mg‐poor clusters; the latter form ACC, expelling Mg.

Metal–Organic Frameworks for Gaseous Pollutant Management: From Capture to Neutralization and Reutilization

open access: yesAdvanced Functional Materials, EarlyView.
This review maps how MOFs can manage hazardous gases by combining adsorption, neutralization, and reutilization, enabling sustainable air‐pollution control. Covering chemical warfare agent simulants, SO2, NOx, NH3, H2S, and volatile organic compounds, it highlights structure‐guided strategies that boost selectivity, water tolerance, and cycling ...

Hybrid Nanofibers for Multimodal Accelerated Wound Healing

open access: yesAdvanced Healthcare Materials, EarlyView.
Fabrication of wound healing scaffolds based on biocompatible nanofibers. Nanofibers offering high surface area, flexibility, and biocompatibility significantly improved the healing outcome in vivo. Histological, immunological, and anti‐inflammatory markers are noticeably better in treated wounds.

Financing Large-Scale Mitigation by Smallholder Farmers: What Roles for Public Climate Finance?

open access: yesFrontiers in Sustainable Food Systems, 2019
There is increasing interest in accessing climate finance to support low-emission, climate resilient agricultural development, but little is understood about how climate finance can be deployed to catalyze large-scale adoption of mitigation practices by ...
