Past and future behavior of the valley glaciers in the Italian Alps

open access: yesFrontiers in Earth Science, 2022
The behavior of the valley glaciers of the Italian Alps as a result of the climate changes expected for the 21st century has been investigated. From 1980 to 2017 the average length reduction of these glaciers has been 13% and their average areal ...

Hot climates, high sensitivity [PDF]

open access: yesProceedings of the National Academy of Sciences, 2013
Climate sensitivity is the Holy Grail of climate science; because CO2 is one of the principal control knobs for climate, sensitivity to changes in atmospheric CO2 concentration is of particular interest. This sensitivity is typically characterized by the change in global mean temperature per doubling of concentration.

An unexpected alternative viologen electron mediator site in tungsten‐containing formate dehydrogenase

open access: yesFEBS Letters, EarlyView.
An unexpected alternative interaction site for ethyl viologen was identified in formate dehydrogenase 1 from Methylorubrum extorquens. Combined mutagenesis, kinetic analysis, and docking revealed that aromatic residues near an iron–sulfur cluster enable flavin mononucleotide‐independent electron transfer, offering a framework for engineering improved ...

Observational Evidence for Two Modes of Coupling Between Sea Surface Temperatures, Tropospheric Temperature Profile, and Shortwave Cloud Radiative Effect in the Tropics

open access: yesGeophysical Research Letters, 2019
Tropical average shortwave cloud radiative effect (SWCRE) anomalies observed by CERES/EBAF v4 are explained by observed average sea surface temperature ( SST‾) and the difference between the warmest 30% where deep convection occurs and SST‾(SST ...

Decreased cold‐sensing function of the transient receptor potential channel TRPM8 from tailed amphibians

open access: yesFEBS Open Bio, EarlyView.
Despite frogs avoiding low temperatures, examination of four salamander species revealed that none avoided cold and all possessed cold tolerance. Functional analysis of TRPM8, a cold sensor, showed that all salamander TRPM8s had lost their cold sensitivity.

Pliocene Warmth and Patterns of Climate Change Inferred From Paleoclimate Data Assimilation

open access: yesAGU Advances
As the last time period when CO2 concentrations were near 400 ppm, the Pliocene Epoch (5.33–2.58 Ma) is a useful paleoclimate target for understanding future climate change. Existing estimates of global warming and climate sensitivity during the Pliocene

Estimating the Effect of Radiative Feedback Uncertainties on Climate Response to Changes in the Concentration of Stratospheric Aerosols

open access: yesAtmosphere, 2020
Using the two-box energy balance model (EBM), we explore the climate system response to radiative forcing generated by variations in the concentrations of stratospheric aerosols and estimate the effect of uncertainties in radiative feedbacks on changes ...

A Semi‐Analytical Model for Water Vapor, Temperature, and Surface‐Albedo Feedbacks in Comprehensive Climate Models

open access: yesGeophysical Research Letters, 2023
Radiative feedbacks govern the Earth's climate sensitivity and elucidate the geographic patterns of climate change in response to a carbon‐dioxide forcing.

Remote Assessment of Ataxia Severity in SCA3 Across Multiple Centers and Time Points

open access: yesAnnals of Clinical and Translational Neurology, EarlyView.
ABSTRACT Objective Spinocerebellar ataxia type 3 (SCA3) is a genetically defined ataxia. The Scale for Assessment and Rating of Ataxia (SARA) is a clinician‐reported outcome that measures ataxia severity at a single time point. In its standard application, SARA fails to capture short‐term fluctuations, limiting its sensitivity in trials.

CMIP5 Intermodel Relationships in the Baseline Southern Ocean Climate System and With Future Projections

open access: yesEarth's Future, 2021
Climate models exhibit a broad range in the simulated properties of the climate system. In the early historical period, the absolute global mean surface air temperature in Coupled Model Intercomparison Project, Phase 5 (CMIP5) models spans a range of ∼12°
