Vulnerability of European intermittent renewable energy supply to climate change and climate variability

open access: yesRenewable & Sustainable Energy Reviews, 2018
The impact of both climate change and climate variability on the supply of intermittent renewable energy sources (I-RES) in Europe are assessed based on global climate model simulations.

Laser‐Induced Graphene from Waste Almond Shells

open access: yesAdvanced Functional Materials, EarlyView.
Almond shells, an abundant agricultural by‐product, are repurposed to create a fully bioderived almond shell/chitosan composite (ASC) degradable in soil. ASC is converted into laser‐induced graphene (LIG) by laser scribing and proposed as a substrate for transient electronics.

Constraining the NAO-temperature teleconnection in CMIP6 simulations enables skillful multi-annual predictions of Eurasian winter climate

open access: yesEnvironmental Research Letters
Predicting the winter climate over Eurasia is challenging as both the initialized predictions and uninitialized climate projections show limited skill in reproducing observed variability on multi-annual to decadal timescales.

Uncertainty in the projected Antarctic contribution to sea level due to internal climate variability [PDF]

open access: yesEarth System Dynamics
Identifying and quantifying irreducible and reducible uncertainties in the Antarctic Ice Sheet (AIS) response to future climate change is essential for guiding mitigation and adaptation policy decision.

The relationship between the SOI and extended tropical precipitation in simulations of future climate change [PDF]

open access: yes, 2002
The Southern Oscillation Index (SOI), its relationship with precipitation, and how greenhouse gas-induced changes in climate may modify these relationships has been examined in 12 coupled atmosphere-ocean Global Climate Model (GCM) experiments. The model

Climate Security Observatory – KENYA. Summary for Policymakers [PDF]

open access: yes, 2023
One of the fastest growing economies in sub-Saharan Africa with a devolved governance system, Kenya can be characterized as a relatively peaceful context when compared to most of its neighboring countries. However, with impacts of climate variability and

Facing climate variability in sub-Saharan Africa: analysis of climate-smart agriculture opportunities to manage climate-related risks

open access: yes, 2018
In the literature, a lot of information is available about climate change perceptions and impacts in sub-Saharan Africa. However, there is limited attention in the region to emerging initiatives, technologies and policies that are tailored to building ...

Elephant‐Skin‐Inspired Porous Cementitious Tiles with Programmable Crack Networks for Passive Cooling

open access: yesAdvanced Materials, EarlyView.
Elephant‐skin‐inspired crack networks are programmed in porous diatomaceous earth (DE)‐cement composites using substrate‐guided, stress‐concentration induced fracture. The resulting crack lattices act as capillary conduits that redistribute water, while the porous matrix stores moisture.

Climate Variability, Fish, and Fisheries

open access: yesJournal of Climate, 2006
Abstract Fish population variability and fisheries activities are closely linked to weather and climate dynamics. While weather at sea directly affects fishing, environmental variability determines the distribution, migration, and abundance of fish.
