Using virtual social networks for case finding in clinical studies: An experiment from adolescence, brain, cognition, and diabetes study

open access: yesInternational Journal of Preventive Medicine, 2017
Background: One of the main usages of social networks in clinical studies is facilitating the process of sampling and case finding for scientists. The main focus of this study is on comparing two different methods of sampling through phone calls and ...

Inhibiting stearoyl‐CoA desaturase suppresses bone metastatic prostate cancer by modulating cellular stress, mTOR signaling, and DNA damage response

open access: yesFEBS Letters, EarlyView.
Bone metastasis in prostate cancer (PCa) patients is a clinical hurdle due to the poor understanding of the supportive bone microenvironment. Here, we identify stearoyl‐CoA desaturase (SCD) as a tumor‐promoting enzyme and potential therapeutic target in bone metastatic PCa.

Myocarditis in children. Clinical findings and myocardial biopsy findings.

open access: yesJapanese Circulation Journal, 1983
Eight children with myocarditis underwent a cardiac catheterization study and right ventricular endomyocardial biopsy. The degree of histological changes of the biopsy specimens correlated well with the severity of the clinical manifestations. Patients who had evidence of residual functional impairment had biopsy findings compatible with their clinical

Structural biology of ferritin nanocages

open access: yesFEBS Letters, EarlyView.
Ferritin is a conserved iron‐storage protein that sequesters iron as a ferric mineral core within a nanocage, protecting cells from oxidative damage and maintaining iron homeostasis. This review discusses ferritin biology, structure, and function, and highlights recent cryo‐EM studies revealing mechanisms of ferritinophagy, cellular iron uptake, and ...

Symmetric dimethylguanidino valeric acid, a novel single biomarker of hepatic steatosis

open access: yesiScience
Summary: There is an unmet need for a biomarker of liver fat. We identified dimethylguanidino valeric acid (DMGV) as a circulating biomarker of liver fat. Here, we assess its two isoforms—symmetric (SDGV) and asymmetric (ADGV)—as biomarkers of steatosis.

Organ‐specific redox imbalances in spinal muscular atrophy mice are partially rescued by SMN antisense oligonucleotides

open access: yesFEBS Letters, EarlyView.
We identified a systemic, progressive loss of protein S‐glutathionylation—detected by nonreducing western blotting—alongside dysregulation of glutathione‐cycle enzymes in both neuronal and peripheral tissues of Taiwanese SMA mice. These alterations were partially rescued by SMN antisense oligonucleotide therapy, revealing persistent redox imbalance as ...
